if by "new mac" you are referring to a mac pro, then yes - the 2408mkii can be used. you'll need to buy a PCIe-424 card for the mac pro ($299 from motu). the card will enable up to 4 current and legacy audiowire devices to be connected.

i'd guess the 8 core machine produces more heat, and as such needs more airflow compared to the older 4 core at the same ambient room temperature.

have you tested the fan noise in a cooler room?

i'd pick up a single mtp/av usb model, and network one of your existing mtp units to it. no need to buy two new interfaces!

my mac pro has a usb mtp/av with an original serial mtp networked to it. works great - the 2 units appear as a single 16 in/out interface on my mac pro.

i use a PCIe-424 in my 2.66 mac pro...i have the card in slot 4 (farthest from graphics card) and haven't experienced a single problem since day one. i bought my PCIe-424 direct from motu mid december 2007.

the 2408 line - and all audiowire devices - require a PCI/PCI-X/PCIe card to use.

while audiowire does share the same type of port and cable with firewire, it's not a compatible format.

if you run straight to the 896/896HD, will the same problem eventually arise? or does it only happen after the aggregate device config has been used at least once?

what version are you running of:
tiger/leopard
quicktime
motu audio drivers

the recording level might be too low. check your input trim on the front of the 828mkII...

sounds like incorrect sample rate...try changing the sample rate then putting it back to the original value.

what application are you trying to use with the 896HD?

have you selected the 896HD as your output device?
