I'm not sure about dragging my MOTU rack along. It does seem to be either the cable or the FW port itself. Of course, it worked transferring files from the old PB via Target Disc, but I couldn't say for sure what the hell it is.
I guess I'll find out this afternoon.

And I did purchase the MBP through PowerMax. :?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, we did find out a few things. The FW port is good. The Genius at the Apple store hooked up an external HD and it mounted right up. OH YEAH, thanks for the suggestion to take the MOTUs with me, we would have never found out the screwiness without them. As per my signature, I have the 828mkII and the 8Pre. Tried the 828 with my MBP - no go. Emilio (the Genuis) pulled out an earlier MBP (non Unibody), bingo! the 828 mounts up, no prob. We try mine again, no go. So he plugs in the ext HD and installs the FW driver on it. The non unibody mounts the 828 right up. Starts my MBP from the ext HD, (known good system folder, known good driver), no 828. In the meantime I called MOTU Tech support, got through on the first ring (three times yesterday!!!!), talked to Joe, who suggested creating a new user account. Still no 828. Then Emilio brings out a 17" MBP, same configuration as mine, loads the driver, no 828.
So then, I finally figure what the hell? I'll try the 8Pre. Shows right up. We try the 17", the 8Pre shows right up.

So for now it seems there is a hardware conflict between Unibody MacBook Pros and the 828mkII. If I light pipe the 828 into the 8Pre, I can see the 8 ADAT inputs in AudioMidi setup. But, that loses the 2 mic pres on the front of the 828. I like having 18 analog inputs as opposed to 16. Call me greedy.

I do have a techlink open with MOTU, just filled in the tech guy on what went down yesterday, guess I'll have to wait and see what they say it is.

Emilio and I were pretty certain there was something screwy with the driver installation or the driver, but that remains to be seen. We were looking at some of the logs and there were a couple of lines that made me think the FW driver was not being completely installed, but not being a coder, I can't be sure. I'll probably post the pertinent parts of the log to the tech link and see what they think.

WHEW!! And it was only 2 hours at the Apple store to find this much out. Along with the hour drive there and back.

Good detective work Pappy! At least you've got the 8Pre to work with while MOTU and Apple sort the 828mkII out.

Well, the MBP still doesn't see the 828 if it's first on the FW chain. However, if I FW to the 8Pre first and then the 828, it shows up and all inputs and outputs are available. Which opens two windows in CueMix. Which is why I liked the 8Pre coming into the 828 ADAT inputs. Only one window in CueMix. Which really isn't that big of a deal, I'm not recording all 18 analog inputs at once on many gigs, much less mixing in CueMix while I do. Mostly I record the bands I play in at live gigs, we suck at trying to track things, so I try and catch good tracks live.

Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Big Band I play with is doing a dance at the airport hotel here in town. That's when I'll be using all 18 inputs. Dec 7th the new Gallery of the Pacific War at the Admiral Nimitz museum here in town is being dedicated and Bush 41 will be here for the festivities. We'll be playing for some of those parties also with our 5 piece.

Just another musical ho'
(with a gear lust problem)

Oh yeah, Joseph, my MOTU techlink guy finally decided my FW ports were bad!
I reminded him that my old PB could still see the FW on the 828. Haven't heard back from him in a few days.

You know, there is something to be said for using the 8Pre as your CueMix interface, 'cause it has the mkIII features, like reverb, right? But if you really need those last two inputs...

I don't think the 8Pre is CueMix FX ready. I got mine right after they came out, which was before the mkIII's came out.

I recorded our 5 piece last night and had more weirdness. Both units showed up in MOTU Audio Setup, but DP only saw the 828. I needed 1 more input, so I logged out of my music account and into my main user, and DP could see both units. I had updated the firmware on the 8Pre and that's the only thing I had changed. I thought that would be for all users, but maybe I need to update it it my music account.
