Making the Jump to the Present

Post by Pappy725 »

Hoo Hoo! Ordered DP7 yesterday and the MacBook Pro today! :D Yeppers, gonna join the 21st century for sure. Now the loooooooooonnnnnnnngggggggggg wait begins. 5-10 business days for the MBP and who knows for DP. Got the email from MOTU that they got my order, still haven't heard if it's shipped yet.
I HATE waiting!!

Gimme that instant gratification everytime!

Pappy, you may get more than you bargained for... rumors are all over the place about updated Macs to be released any day. Maybe not the laptops, though, but you never know.

You're gonna' have fun either way. :D

Well, that's okay, cause I got the mid 2008 version. It had just dropped about $500 on powermax.com. It's still gonna be lightyears ahead of this old workhorse. Got the shipping confirmation this morning, supposed to be here at the house in Texas on the 20th. This is gonna be a long week.

Interesting thing is, the MBP has two graphics cards. One for better battery life and one for (obviously) better graphics.

Now if I could hear from MOTU about DP7 shipping out to me... :?

OWC says "any date" for Mini's and iMacs in their latest newsletter email. MacRumors people pointed out shipping delays as indicating forthcoming upgrades. Pappy's 5-10 day stated delivery window makes me wonder if changes might not also be happening in the laptop lineup as well. I'm just sayin', but it would be just in time to drive Holiday gift givers Apple's way.

Here's OWC 8 days back:
New Macs may be imminent!
If you are considering a new Mac, you may not have long to wait for the next Mac model speed bumps/refresh to appear. Last week we learned that inventories of various iMac and Mac mini models were becoming very low / depleted. This we we have heard of a 'trio of ads' that briefly surfaced in Europe via Dutch driven version of Google's adsense that would suggest new, faster Mac mini options with a lower starting price, new slimmer iMac models, and a "thinner, lighter, and stronger" MacBook model.

This is about the time Apple normally does some 'freshening' of its line, so as soon as tomorrow (Tuesday 10/6) such speculation could be resolved. Even if it's not tomorrow, I'd be surprised if there weren't at least new iMacs before this month concludes.

Just purchased a new or refurbished Mac from Apple? Should something new be released within 14 days from such a purchase, you can still return your Mac to Apple for a refund/exchange. Another option usually offered is a credit adjustment to the price you paid in exchange for keeping what you've got.
In their last email, I recall they were more committal than the above.

Okay guys, I need help. Got the MBP, got DP7, installed DP, FW drivers, plugged in the FW cable, started up the 828 and 8Pre, nothing. :( MOTU Audio Setup doesn't open, if I open it, it doesn't see the hardware. Suggestions? I did log out and restart to no avail.
Hoping for help,
Pappy

All I can suggest is be sure you have the latest drivers. Did you download them from MOTU? I've been using the latest FW drivers posted there with no problems. I am, however, still on DP 6.02.

Oooh, one other thing. Have you checked that FW port with some other device?

I copied the installer for the latest drivers (FW Installer 1.4.3) from my old PB. I'm going to download them today, couldn't get motu.com to load up in Safari last night. Bad request or some sort of error message.

Yeah, the cable thing. I used this (800to400) cable to transfer files from the old PB via Target disc. Worked great. Wouldn't even mount an external FW HD last night though. I do have another 800 to 400 cable and will try that later today. Just home for lunch right now.

What I did was:
Got MBP, had10.5 on it. SL in the box.
Erased the drive, installed SL, ran software update. 10.6.1
Installed iLife '09, ran software update.
Installed DP7, downloaded and installed 7.01.
Installed my T-Racks plugins.
Repaired permissions.
Restarted.
Plugged in the 828mkII and turned it on. Nothing.
I have ext. HDs behind the 828 and they didn't show up either.
Disk utility did not see them.
Motu audio setup did not open, I opened it first, then turned on the 828, still nothing.

Today, Hooked up to the old PB, and everything shows up great.
HDs and everything.

Oh well, I guess I get to reset the 828 to factory defaults and see if that helps.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Are you sure about the number on that? The latest download I have from them is:

Type: driver
Date: 2009/07/03
Language: english
Version: 1.4.23

You're right, it's 1.4.23. Wasn't looking at the file at the time.
But, in the Finder, the name is MOTU Audio Installer 1.4.23, and the date is 8/31/09. At the bottom it says Version 3.3?
What the heck?
Anyway, still isn't showing up. This is the first time I can remember installing something on my Mac and it not working right off.

Reset the 828 to factory defaults?
I'll try it without the 8Pre and HDs connected first though.

Did that last night. Same result. Today I'll try to reach MOTU's tech support by phone. Wish me luck! :?

Well, that was surprise. I got Tech Support on the first ring. John was very helpful in determining that it might be the FW port on my MBP. Which I kinda already suspected.
Anyway, long story short, I've got an appointment at the Apple store in San Antonio (50 miles away) this afternoon. If they try to give me the bad cable story, I'll mention that I bought it from their store last week.
OY!

Anyway, at least I'll find out something one way or the other.
Thanks for the moral support HC, this has been really frustrating.

I'll let y'all know how it goes.

In my experience, Apple has been anxious to make sure customers are happy. And when your name rhymes with happy, this becomes doubly important! You might want to bring the interface and cable along as well... the proof is in the pudding, as they say.
