Ended happily with the 828.
I'm sure the near future will bring new options but I'm good to go.

Re: Making Cd masters for replication in dp and iTunes
Yes, bias peak is gone. My g5 tiger just died, taking with it a lot of great software that will not work in my new Mac mini. The day finally came for the big upgrade to dp8, etc.

Emrr said: The Orion looks great, but USB seems overly problematic and appears to give less options.

replacing 2408 with comparable hybrid
my G5 died today, in case you hear bagpipes. It had a good life. good work ethic. I just picked up a mac mini. (I know new mac pros are imminent). If I toss out my 2408, I'm thinking the 828 hybrid is the closest comparable non-pci device that will handle 2 light pipes. Is this right? It looks like ...

Re: Mac mini as MIDI farm master primarily
It's ironic that the post about the new Mac Pro just appeared.
As mentioned around here, at the very least that'll drive down the price of the refurbs.

Mac mini as MIDI farm master primarily
Still in the farm business, slaving a kontakt pc and, yes, a giga studio pc, my Mac needs are more for MIDI and fewer than 24 tracks of audio. I do think a Mac mini might suffice for a dp machine. I might run amplitude and a couple vi things in the Mac , but most in the slave. I get that waiting for...

Re: Making Cd masters for replication in dp and iTunes
Thanks for the input. I guess I'll reinstall bias peak.
If the files are converted in dp, what does iTunes do that is destructive? Isn't it just compiling the wave files?

Making Cd masters for replication in dp and iTunes
I'm used to making cd masters on PEAK which has excellent dithering from 24 to 16 bit. I'm having some trouble with peak, so I'm wondering:
1- How is cd making directly in dp
2- how is the quality of making cd masters in iTunes these days

Reconsidering FireWire interfaces
The conventional wisdom was always that pci was faster, more powerful and more efficient than FireWire audio interfaces in the past. (I lightpipe in from pc slaves.)
Should i wait for thunderbolt?
Dare I reconsider FireWire in this new environment?

importing mod wheel crossfade patches
I have tried loading other format libraries with mod wheel crossfades, and it seems as though M5 is playing all the layers simultaneously, without the controller info... or something strange anyway. One example is the Bela D Media spiritual winds anthology (.nki), although it seems to happen with al...

Re: is this the obvious quest?
But haven't we always thought of PCI as being superior to firewire?
The only option for the mac mini would be a firewire interface, or to wait for a TB interface, right?

is this the obvious quest?
I'm finally thinking of getting a new mac after many happy years with my dual G5 and my 2408. I'm new to the party on this issue. Is this what we are all waiting for?: http://www.creativeplanetnetwork.com/dv/news/motu-partners-apple-and-intel-develop-thunderbolt/18385 I read herein about various con...
