is this the obvious quest?

Post by gaucho »

I'm finally thinking of getting a new mac after many happy years with my dual G5 and my 2408. I'm new to the party on this issue. Is this what we are all waiting for?:

I read herein about various conversion schemes.

So to bring me up to date in a nutshell, we await a 2408-type device that uses TB rather than PCI. That's the elephant in the room, right?

I don't know why MOTU would find it necessary to go to TB for an audio interface. The bandwidth is way more than is needed. Maybe they plan a new Cuemix FX that needs a lot more bandwidth, or maybe they're talking about video.

Whatever they and others have in mind, I hope it gets cheap and common very quickly, and they provide some connectivity for older USB and FW equipment.

But haven't we always thought of PCI as being superior to firewire?
The only option for the mac mini would be a firewire interface, or to wait for a TB interface, right?

Yes, but more for drives and other items than for the audio interface. TB will be great as long as a lot of manufacturers support it.

Everybody, and I do mean Everybody, is waiting for Intel to release those inexpensive TB chip sets for peripherals. The deadline was last spring.

That's what I was wondering. I guess I'm joining the crowd.

Maybe we should forget it and wait for The Next Big Thing.
