Since posting, I've had few problems with my Traveler, but I have learned a lot about how unreliable the stability of the preamps are (but also about how good the customer support is when exchanging them). I still use it, but have also invested in a little Apogee Duet for traveling with on short jou...

David, some nice advice in that post, thanks. I'll have a look at some sound designers (David Lynch is great I think, makes you feel amazingly unsettled at times), and I should really start experimenting like you say tha sound designer did with 'Chronicles of Riddick'. I've been looking into buying ...

Hi MIDI Life Crisis (great name by the way), Good to hear you cut cheese as well, only the best of us do. It sounds like it would be a good learning experience to hear some of your work considering you please your clients regularly (not that I don't either, but would like to improve either way). Is ...

Thanks for that Jarok, I'll definitely read through the advice there. I get the impression that it's all about experimenting judgin by this line: Rule number one. There are no rules. The coolest sounds come from a relentless drive to experiment. Use any device in you studio to create your effects. G...

Is there a good resource for sound design/production

Hi, I've been told by an agency I'm trying to get work through that I am more a 'traditional composer' rather than 'sound designer/producer'. When I asked what they meant exactly, they said that my compositions were far more based on conventional music theory using standard instruments rather than u...

Hi Buzzsmith,

Things just get better. I really thought they'd never get round to doing a GVI for Mac, but that's perfeect, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Well, I've just about seen all that I needed to see/hear. It looks incredible, very nice demos on the VSL site and I think perfect for my needs (I'd most likely get the extended pack as well) I think a combo like this with MachFive (so that I could load up my existing giggs) would be the solution, a...

I assume you have Vienna then? It sounds great from the demos. I'm assuming that the extended library is pretty fundamental in making realistic scores though? Still, it's about the same price as the QLSO platinum pack under its current discount. My impression is that anything with a Kontakt player i...

That certainly looks very good, and may well be my solution! Do you think it would work as well as the Platinum bundle? I have some VSL instruments that I use in Giga and they are superb, just wondering about the interface it uses... What's the general consensus is on QLSO Plat edition vs Vienna Ins...

QLSO Platinum vs Giga in DP

Hi, I'm about to dish out for an orchestral 'mobile solution' and have been interested in buying the QLSO Platinum bundle (which has both original and XP Pro expansion) as it is currently amazingly cheap at dv247.com. I've been using Giga in DP, but having to rely on a separate PC to stream the samp...

Ultralite has fewer digital I/O and S/R max at 96. Also Traveler has better A/D/A (always judging by my ears...) Why don't u replace Traveler...? I'm thinking about it, maybe with the Fireface 400. I reset my Traveler to the factory defaults which has helped a bit, although the 2nd input is still i...

Hi,

I bought it from Zzounds in October time last year. I reset to the factory defaults, updated the firmware and driver and that seems to have helped a bit, but the 2nd input is still noisy as hell.

May well be a bad batch...

Spoke with MOTU support, they suggest I update to the latest driver and firmware and reset to the factory defaults. This has brought the noise down considerably, but input 2 is still very noise in comparison to the rest, and the occasional crackle slips through. If you have the same problem, I recom...

I heard of a guy who had Gigastudio running on Mac Minis via Bootcamp, not with Machfive, but said they worked great. He had a Mac mini for each library as he didn't want to run external drives (he was loaded obviously). I've been interested in finding a portable solution to a separate DAW for Giga ...
