What's wrong with Traveler?

Post by macdeath »

I start this topic cause I observed two things.

1st of all I obtained one unit a year ago. I loved its preamps and converters alongside with the lots of its functions.

But since then I have never fully use it for over a month. I haven't received a fully functional piece after exchange it for 4 times. By today I am waiting for the 5th replacement unit. The problems were mainly on the preamps (extreme noise, ground loop alike) and sometimes some outputs didn't work.

SO does any Traveler owner uses it fully with most of its functions for more than 3 years without a problem???

I dunno. I got the ultralight. It is a rock. It lives in my gig bag and gets knocked about and just keeps on going. I don't need 4 mics, 2 is enough, and 8 in/8 out mixer is great.

It does seem a little like the Traveler is sort of a lemon by comparison. I wonder why people choose it over the UL?

It has more Digital I/Os. But Ultralite rocks for sure...

I'm bringing up this post again because I'm one of those people that has a lemon and am unimpressed. I've had to switch to outputs 3/4 to keep my mixes going (too much noise and crackle on 1/2 now). I'm really not impressed, but was wondering if the Ultralite might be a better bet considering I'd like more portability and less hassle.

Obviously losing the 2 other mic pre's will be a pain in the ass, but what else will I be losing? Is the Ultralite that much more limited than the Traveler?

I feel short-changed...

Ultralite has fewer digital I/O and S/R max at 96.

Also Traveler has better A/D/A (always judging by my ears...)
Why don't u replace Traveler...?

I'm thinking about it, maybe with the Fireface 400. I reset my Traveler to the factory defaults which has helped a bit, although the 2nd input is still incredibly noisy...

I've been hearing good things about the Fireface 400, just don't know how compatible it is with other things like Logic and DP...

I've had mine for roughly 1 - 1 1/2 years with no major issues. My Traveler has been taken to several on-location recording sessions, in addition to the work I do at home, and has been perfectly reliable each time. About two months ago I noticed that the noise floor on the 4th channel pre is about 6dB higher than the others, but it hasn't been a big enough issue for me to want to send it in. I've just been using that channel for snares & kick drums and other signals that don't require an ultra-low noise floor. Thus far the noise floor hasn't gotten any higher, and it seems as though it may have always been like this and I just never really used that channel enough to notice (lots of outboard stuff going into line-ins 5-8 normally).

In any case, I hope your next replacement Traveler is the last you have to worry about!

I just posted a problem with traveler , it's my thrid too! i had to change it twice.
ch 1 is noisy even with nothing attached, the unit completely standalone...
i think it comes down to luck... probably material is not top quality and a slight glitch in assembly makes a poor unit for life.
last motu for me

I have had mine for about 2 years with no problems and I take it all over the world with me. Maybe I should sell it as one of the units that actually works : )

Hi all.

I goy my Traveler last week and am having noise problems on the Micpres.

Only when 48v is engaged. Channel 1 is a bit worse the the rest.

Wrote this to the techsupport.

My system is a Mac-Pro 2.66 with 6 gb ram.OS X leopard.
All software is the latest. Both system and Logic.
I didn‘t have any digital equipment connected when i experience this.

I made a small test and this is how I set it up.

I have nothing connected to the Mic Input 1 and nothing at Mic Input 2
I switch on 48v on both. ( i have tested this with balanced mic cables connected as well)

I record the noise at 96kHz that comes from these two inputs with the trim-gain at max (+53dB) No Pad selected.

On channel 1 I get a really ugly digital noise around 250Hz + 500Hz.
The 250Hz peaks up at -45dB Very ugly and very audible.

Channel 2 gives less of a problem. -52dB at 250Hz but the same ugly sound.

I get similar results at 48kHz but then channel 1 peaks at -48dB and channel 2 still at -52dB

This also happens standalone without the mac even running.
Its never to late to be late...

I have two Travelers, and both of them are too noisy for anything serious work. All the inputs have a noise floor nearly as loud as anything I am recording, and the main outs are so noisy that only loud music can drown them out. I have owned a ton of motu gear (mtp, mtp-av, 2408, 2408mk2, 2408mk3, 2 1296's, hd192, 308, and probably other stuff too). So I was rather surprised, to say the least. When I mentioned this to one of their guys at AES, all he did was tell me how many awards this thing has won. And this was even after I mentioned that he could come here and see numerous reports of noisy Travelers. He simply didn;t want to hear about it. Clueless, incompetent, rude, and unprofessional. By comparison, when I made a suggestion over at the Digi booth, the guy took out a Palm and wrote down everything I said.
