Maxtor or WD inside a Firewire Case. I had a Lacie and it crapped out on me so I pulled the drive and place it inside a $30 Firewire/USB 2.0 Case and all has been well.

Here is the Apple Profile View of the device....Firewire Mode.....

I like the Neptune drives from Other World Computing <www.macsales.com>.

They're fast & reliable.

Check my Gear link below, which has links to the various components of the eSATA setup I use. It's been a joy to work with since it just works, is infinitely expandable by hot-swapping drives, and can't be overloaded (as far as I can tell so far).

I have a couple LaCie external SATAs (7200rpm) for audio files and samples and a LaCie FW for system backup. So far, all good experiences.

There's probably less expensive, but I didn't see a couple hundred here or there as being worth the effort to search any further than I did. The case allows for hot-swapping drives and for infinite expansion (just pop an empty SATA drive in). Too, it includes 4 SATA connectors (dedicated SATA to each drive), so the bandwidth to the case is 4xSATA. Plus, e.g. status lights, power supply for 4 drives, and being brushed aluminum, it looks like a small G5 :-)

I've got two western digital drives, 8MB buffer. 7200, each installed in a combo USB/FIREWIRE case.

Cost for each drive and case under $100. Total cost $200.

Very quiet, reliable/stable, and mobile.

Still seems high for a case that I have to spend another $400 to $500 filling up with drives.

I stuffed 4 additional drives in my G5. I f I need a removeable, firewire is adequate. I have 2 of my internals raided so if I need speed I transfer the file.....

Of course that is what works for me. :)

I prefer one of these solutions similar to what you have for only 170 for the case. or even an 8 Bay Case for only 270.00 Looks mean nothing in a machine room. And functionality isnt changed. Cant see drive lights in a machine room, but you sure can hear 4 drives spinning in a control room.

Also SATA only supports one device per port/connection so it is no big spec that there are sep connectors for each drive. All eSata Solutions provide that cuz the spec demands it.

So in the end I am speaking of a similar solution that runs 400 less than the Kano. Even if it doesnt look like a mini G5.

BTW just grabbed 4 250GB SATA Drives for 80 a pc. so for 530.00 One could have 1TB of eSATA in the case for 40 bucks less than the Kano Case alone. Then I can spend that additional 400 on my wife (Vacation/Spa, etcc... = Great Loving :) ) Or
