Can't import a mono file

Post by swpowe »

Please help! I assume this is possible but I for the life of me can't figure it out.
I've got a stereo wave file that came out of pro tools, I deinterleaved the file so now I have file.L.wave and file.R.wav. When I pull one of the files into DP, it always pulls both and creates a single stereo file. How can I separate these two files? I'm sure I could rename them and that would probably work but is there a preference or something I'm missing?

You meant that you created a mono track in DP first and then dragged the file into it or are you attempting to import it as a soundbite?

I'm trying to import it as a soundbite. If I drag it from the finder into the soundbite window in DP, it shows up as a stereo file not just the one mono file (left or right).

Haven't had to do this in awhile, but I believe you have to remove the .L and .R from the file names before you import. So if you files are something like filename.L.wav and filename.R.wav, rename them something like filename_left.wav and filename_right.wav. That should do the trick.

If you have a batch of them, you can use a file renamer. For Mac I use one called NameChanger which works well.

DP sees the .L and knows to look for a .R file. It's trying to do you a favor. To my knowledge there isn't a way to change this behavior. So you use the workaround suggested and change the name.

You can also do this in Finder but I forget the procedure. There’s a very old post somewhere where I explained how.

if it's just a matter of renaming a bunch of files, you could do it like this:
create a new Folder - maybe call it "Lefts" and drag all of your .L files in there. Now select all of those files within the folder and Right-Click and you'll see "Rename X Items" (where "X" indicates the number of files you are renaming. When that window opens, select "Replace Text" and next to "Find:" type ".L" and next to "Replace With" type nothing....just hit RETURN. All of your files should now have no ".L" as extensions.
Repeat entire procedure with ".R" files

Select the files and a Rename command appears in the Finder>File menu. If you select more than one file, a window with a number of rename types and options appears. Using the "replace text" option lets you rename filename suffixes.

Hello,
You only need to delete the period, the "L" can stay for reference.
It's the ear, not the gear!
