Can I use DP8 in 64 bit mode with a Mac that's EFI 32 bit?
Like it asks in the subject, I'm itching to upgrade to DP8, but I've got a Mac Pro 1,1 (32 bit EFI) and I'm not sure it will give me the things I really want. The most important question is whether I'll be able to access all 16 GB of ram.
Here's the deal as I understand it. I run Snow Leopard [10.6.8] but it can't boot into 64 bit mode according to this article - http://www.everymac.com/mac-answers/sno ... -mode.html
I think that means there is no access to anything beyond 4GB of ram. If I'm wrong, please tell me.

We've gone through this a million times. Search the forum.
The short answer is: YES, you can use DP8 in 64bit and access more than 4gb or ram.

Steve's question has actually not been asked a lot before. Because his is different.
Welcome Steve.
If you computer can not boot into the 64-bit Kernal (which Apple says it can not)...then you will be dafaulting to 32-bit mode because the OS is not in 64-bit. And unfortunately in 32-bit mode...you will be limited to the 4GB of RAM just as before. So...unless you can find a hack (which may exist)...to run your MacPro with the 64-bit Kernal...you may be out of luck with 64-bit DP (Or any other true 64-bit program).
The program will still run...but it is having the OS under the 64-bit Kernal as well as the program in 64-bit mode that lets you access all of the RAM. So your suspicions are correct.

Brian... I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure this is not correct. You do not have to be booted into the 64-bit kernel to run DP in 64-bit mode and allow DP to access more than 4GB RAM. We have gone over this before.bralston wrote:The program will still run...but it is having the OS under the 64-bit Kernal as well as the program in 64-bit mode that lets you access all of the RAM. Re: Can I use DP8 in 64 bit mode with a Mac that's EFI 32 bi
Look at this thread starting here part way down page 9 of it and continuing into 10. It's pretty clear DP8 can access more than 4GB of RAM if launched in 64-bit mode on a MacPro 1,1 booted in the the 32-bit kernel.

Then thank you James. And sorry for further confusing the issue. I guess this is what I get after coming out from being busy on a film for a while.
Then Steve, seems like you are good to go.

Re: Can I use DP8 in 64 bit mode with a Mac that's EFI 32 bi
Hey Brian... I understand completely! It's been a very confusing subject and one we're all trying to wrap our heads around. And from what I've heard, manufacturers may eventually not update 32-bit kernel extensions (which I believe is what "drivers" are) to hardware like audio interfaces, and I'll be stuck at that point.bralston wrote:Then thank you James. Re: Can I use DP8 in 64 bit mode with a Mac that's EFI 32 bi
Don't worry, Brian. We didn't have a final answer to this question until someone with a Mac Pro 1.1 (32 bit kernel) actually booted DP in 64 bits and showed us that it was using more memory than previously allowed. We had lots of evidence that this would be the case, including articles by very knowledgeable people, but there was always a catch that made us wonder, "did they consider THIS?" So, it was one of those 90% sure things, that didn't become 100% until we had the empirical evidence. Few questions have so plagued us for an answer as this one.bralston wrote:Then thank you James. Re: Can I use DP8 in 64 bit mode with a Mac that's EFI 32 bi
The answer as FL stated is yes! There is no doubt. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 (32 bit EFI) with 7GB RAM. I've been using DP8 64 bit and have easily accessed more than 4GB RAM. Just for kicks I loaded 9 instances of Trilian with the acoustic bass patch and one instance of Ivory 2 (Bosendorfer) for a total DP usage per the activity monitor of 5.79 GB. I do have a screen shot to post but don't know how to do that here.

Same here. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 (32 bit EFI). DP has access to more RAM and is working perfectly. I'm only experiencing a few minor glitches with the GUI and menus, everything else is working wonderfully. I'm very pleased. Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
