828 (Original) and Windows 7 x64 - BSOD (motufwa.sys)

Post by carteranderson »

I have a MOTU 828 Firewire, and previously had it working great with Windows Vista x64 with drivers I found on MOTU's website.

I rebuilt my computer with a new processor, more RAM (8 GB), and new hard drives... in order to install Windows 7 x64 on it. I mistakenly found an old MOTU 828 driver on driverguide.com and installed it. It called for a reboot, which I did, then when connecting my 828 to the computer's Firewire port, I kept getting "no MOTU devices found" error pop-up.

I searched around some more on MOTU's website and found the latest USB/Firewire interface drivers for Windows 7 x64. Downloaded those, uninstalled the older driver, and installed these. First, a pop-up appeared stating the MOTU MIDI device was detected and running OK but the MOTU Wave device was not. Then, a BSOD occurred and the error listed a file named 'motufwa.sys'.

My computer rebooted, and before the Windows 7 desktop completely reloaded, the BSOD appeared again. I looked at the back of my PC and noticed the 828 was still connected (so I obviously left it connected when I uninstalled the older driver and installed the latest one). I don't know what to do next.

Has anybody successfully gotten any 828 working in Windows 7 x64? Or should I waste my time and look for another external audio interface?

I have an original 828 working with 64-bit Windows 7. Have you tried getting in touch with tech support?

Not yet. Did you get the Firewire/USB Audio Interface driver from MOTU's website to get it working?

I got it working!

I don't know what caused the problem (installing the older driver, then removing it, then trying to install the new driver while the MOTU was connected), but I decided to start over with my Windows 7 x64 install. I'd only installed Norton 360 at that point, so it was cool.

So, I formatted the hard drive, re-installed Windows 7 x64, then downloaded & installed Norton 360, then downloaded & installed the latest Firewire/USB audio interface driver from MOTU's website, rebooted, and connected the MOTU. All is working fine.
