need an echo... echo...

Post by auptown »

I am trying to find something to sound like the sort of echo / reverb that might have been used in the old girl bands; to my ear it's not a set of real clear and clean discrete echos, but something sort of spacier. Maybe it was some sort of tape delay.

I have UAD-1 including the Dreamverb and Plate, as well as Wizooverb W2, and of course the DP native plugs. The Delay plug in DP is the closest I have found, but I am looking for something different.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

AudioDamage Dubstation

The examples on the site are obviously more extreme - as for dub music, but it can do subtle stuff easily, too. And price is right.

I use a Line6 Echo Pro on vocals quite alot (and the Filter Pro too!). It has a space echo modeller on it and lots of other things, too. They both sync to DP fine.

These are the rack versions and they're discontinued now but if anyone spots one second hand, they're lots of fun and very useful.

I think the Girlbands of the 60s either used a tile chamber, or in Phil Spectors case a recording room with reflective walls, or in smaller studios a tape echo.
There••™s also the combination of both (a room and a dedicated tape recorder) like early Gene Vincent and Duane Eddy.

To get the dirtyness of the old box in room with mikes through tube board sound, I would suggest using an amp-simulation software and good reverbplug.

Speaking of retro-echos, I have been looking high and wide for a plug-in that can do the cascading of several tapeheads, speaking of up to 5 heads feeding each other, like the old Dynacord tape-echoes of the 60s. Is it hard to program? There are patches for hardware-delays floating around, to exactly replicate any echo The Shadows used on their hits. But no software plugs - really strange!

you could probably try a plate verb emulator...i think a lot of the older acts used that kind of stuff.

Oh, I'd misread the original post. You're looking for an old school girl group kind of vibe? Altiverb has echo chamber convolutions that'd likely work for you. That plus UAD-1 Plate 140 would get you close.

If he's going to try IRs, wouldn't it make sense to try them in WizooVerb first since he already owns that?

I would recommend the Lexicon PSP42, but PSP have moved to requiring dongles so they aren't really a viable option any longer. Very sad about that :(

i thought only some of their plugs required dongles? i have the psp delays/filter and there's no dongle...

or is this going to happen with the ub updates?

Wow thanks everybody for the suggestions. Really I was looking for what Kawentzmann (did I get that right?) was talking about, a multi-head tape delay, (but steroeo!) like the old school girl bands. I did try the Roland plug in UAD-1 but didn't like it, and I ended up buying the Filterscape and Audio Damage plugs and using a combination of them. It works, but was not exactly what I was looking for.

So any more thoughts about good tape delay emulators would be cool.
