Maybe the removal of the CPU Plugins extension is specific to the Giga install.
Please post the final "gritty" details when this all gets straightened out for the benefit of others.
Did you check out install reports here???

Post your final outcome there as well. Your experience will really help someone else achieve a successful install.
Just curious, what has Sonnet had to say about your situation so far?

Well, first of all they asked what specifically happens when I try to boot into OS9 and what version of OS9 I have. He suggested putting the old CPU back in (from when I upgraded to their 1.4GHz.)flashgerkin wrote:Just curious, what has Sonnet had to say about your situation so far?
I gave him my info and he said it's definitely OS9 that's not working right. Then he suggested zapping the PRAM and resetting the PMU (the latter I haven't done.)
Then he said that an OSX version of their firmware upgrade is in the works. Didn't say how long, though. Which brings us around to my last query about whether or not I even need the firmware upgrade.
Anyway, thanks for the interest in my prob

My big recording session went without a hitch this weekend. Would have loved to have tried out the Duet, though.

www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/index.php - check this site for G4/card compatability.
I bought my card here - it tells exactly which card is compatable with your machine. Also Sonnet's own website does. However - I can't find a reference to a Sawtooth on either site - which machine is yours?
You already have a Sonnet card installed ? Did you install all the downloads and software for that to enable you to use the machine in OS9? There were a few things I needed to install to make it work properly.
Dumb question - I suppose you have tried to reinstall OS9 on your main drive?
Good luck - the answer is out there - it might take a bit of searching and don't be put off by some people who say it can't be done.

Does OS9 still work with the 1.4GHz?taggart wrote: He suggested putting the old CPU back in (from when I upgraded to their 1.4GHz.)
So, OS9.2 worked fine before with the 1.4, you install a new cpu and now it doesn't work. Something is off here!!!taggart wrote:he said it's definitely OS9 that's not working right.

Ok just to clarify...Flashgerkin: I installed the Sonnet 1.4GHz a couple of years ago. At that time I was able to boot into OS 9 and do all the required firmware upgrades. And I've been able to boot into OS 9 (and boot from CDs) ever since then...until just recently. Yes, OS 9 has been working perfectly before and after the FIRST upgrade.
GuitarGaz: Yeah, I can't really install anything because I can't boot from CD either. Also, you asked if I intalled stuff for the 1.4GHz upgrade card. Yes, I installed everything required, I assume, 'cause the 1.4GHz upgrade card is chugging away even as I type this!
That's why I'm wondering if I already have everything I need to install the DUET without having to boot into OS 9. And that was my last question to Sonnet before the weekend. Hopefully I'll get an answer Monday. Like I said, they've been real prompt about answering my emails.
The saga continues.

In which case you have probably done everything already in terms of firmware - you may not need to do anything else. I bet if you try and install the new cpu duet it will work straight away - and if you are not bothered about OS9 then you have no problems. I suspect the OS( problem is nothing to do with the card as such - good luck and let us know what happens as I have a 1.4ghz Sonnet and I could possibly do what you are trying to do in the future (especially if duet cards come down in price).

I'm skeptical about that.
OS9 worked before the cpu upgrade, but not after. Hum?
A cpu upgrade shouldn't be this frustrating!!!
The instructions with the GigaDesign dual 1.8 specifically addressed how to boot into OS9. (like removing the CPU Plugins extension). I followed the instructions and had dual boot capability as promised. (I don't use OS9 anymore. However I am slow to change... so I made sure it would be available just in case...).
Guitar Gaz, my advice would be to purhcase the Giga dual 1.8. Just check for compatibility with your machine. However, I just checked the macgurus website. The Gigas must be selling like hot cakes because they're on back-order.
At any rate, I hope Sonnet comes through for taggart

as long as you have the correct firmware you shouldnt have to do anything else. did one for my friends 400mhz g4. plus he doesnt need os9 so everything was flawless.

Taggart -- your 1.4 and your 1.8 may be different processors. . .taggart wrote: If I have the correct firmware ALREADY installed, then I can just leave OS 9 in the dust, FOREVER!![]()
I'll keep you posted!
I am pretty sure that the dual 1.8 are 7447a based.
I *think* that the 1.4 is a 7445, looking at the specs
I know that the 7447's definately require a firmware upgrade for your mac to see them.
So I am guessing that you still need to apply that firmware upgrade.
Hope it all works out -- keep us posted. The folks at sonnet are good! They will help you get it to work.

Hi, guys! Yeah, Neal from Sonnet wrote me back and said I DO in fact, need the firmware upgrade. And he again reassured me that an OSX firmware upgrade is in the works. I guess it seems funny to me that there isn't an OSX firmware upgrade version available right now! I'm not sure how all that stuff works, anyway!
My session went off without a hitch this weekend, anyway. But I sure am itching to try the Duet.
I've got an old college buddy who works at a computer store (In fact "The Computer Store") here in town and he said he'd look at it. In fact he's the one who sold it to me (bastard!) No, just kidding. He's a great guy and the machine HAS paid for itself many times over. But I know he's gonna try to sell me a new one...he always does!

Hi, Phil! That's an interesting solution. So did you have 9.2.2 on your G4 and then "downgrade" to 9.2.1? What disc did you use to install 9.2.1? My other problem is (among many!
) I can't boot from ANY CD I've tried. Diskwarrior, Software Install, Software Restore, TechTool...I can't boot into any of them. The more I try to figure this out, the more I think that my OS9 system is corrupt. If I could boot from a CD I would just re-install OS9 and I think that would be that.
Anyway, I realize this has probably veered a bit off topic and I aplologize. Things will work out. They always seem to!

i also have the giga dual 1.8. i installed it in a g4 single 800, and it was mostly painless, except for osx freezing all the time
. their tech support had me try a few different fixes, but what i eventually had to settle for was configuring it to run at dual 1.73. it's been great ever since, and they refunded the difference.
the upgrade came with a small app with very few options (i forget what most of them are), one of which is enabling booting into os9. i clicked the check box, and i switch back and forth at will.
i definitely recommend GD- their tech support is great, and so are their products.

could you elaborate on that a little?flashgerkin wrote:Also ask them about OSX 10.4.6.
I had to make a jumper cable adjustment on my Giga to give "Tiger" more 'juice'.
