Balance. It makes a mix, and it makes a forum. I try to support those who are having to endure bugs, but I also try to show that the problems are not universal (unless they really are universal). It's important to solve the problems, but it's also important that new users or potential users don't turn and run when they enter a room of angry individuals reporting that DP has just blown up their refrigerator, had sex with the telephone, and is getting 3 miles to a gallon of Jack Daniels.chrispick wrote:And again, I'll emphasize: I don't think you can get an accurate gauge of DP 5 usability via this or any other bulletin board. That said, I do think it's worth it to fish for disparate experiences in the hope of maybe gaining some balance.
I've been using Perfomer since version 5.5, Digital Performer since 1.0. In '98 I had an epiphany that I'd like track folders, the same way I can have layer folders in Photoshop and Flash. As a workaround, I started using blank MIDI tracks as labels (with titles like ••••••GUITARS••••••), and color-coded each section of my tracklist. I'm now in the process of converting these over to track folders (and rethinking some of my organization a bit.)Morpheo wrote:wow that's 1998.... to me, if you keep old versions of DP around, and things crash, you have to wonder if this is due to having old versions around on the first placechrispick wrote:The main precaution to take is to keep 4.61 (or earlier depending on your use) on your box. If DP5 runs sweetly, then sweet. If sourly, then revert.Kazrog wrote:Look, I'm not going to try to disupte the bugs anyone's had, as everyone's setup is different - however, there are a lot of important details missing from these posts (configuration, what precautions, or lack thereof, were taken prior to installing DP5, etc.), and if you follow the steps I have taken, you can get into DP5 risk-free.toodamnhip wrote: there are various threads about DP5 problems, one I created asked if bugs with dp5 are enough to NOT upgrade...I think it's now on page 2.
There are at least 2-3 other threads...
People are complaining about various issues, but the one that concerned me was the guy saying his formerly good mix was playing back with changes in automation etc...go look it all up, it's all there..
good luck
MOTU's obviously put a lot of hard work into this release, but with any major software update you have to take certain precautions. I know that a lot of you probably already have, and I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence, but there does seem to be a Chicken Little syndrome around here lately...

MOTU fully supports older versions. Each application in OS X runs in its own protected space. It's impossible for the older versions to interfere. You can wonder all you want, but it's not going to change that.toodamnhip wrote: to me, if you keep old versions of DP around, and things crash, you have to wonder if this is due to having old versions around on the first place
I defy anyone to get 3 STEPS on a gallon of Jack Daniels.Shooshie wrote:and is getting 3 miles to a gallon of Jack Daniels.
You betcha. I should do a screenshot some day of a track list of something like 320 MIDI tracks, divided into sections just as you described with dividers like:Kazrog wrote:As a workaround, I started using blank MIDI tracks as labels (with titles like ••••••GUITARS••••••), and color-coded each section of my tracklist. What's trippy is that I'm sure there are people from the old-school Performer days who have wanted track folders for the last 20 years.
LOL..Kazrog wrote:MOTU fully supports older versions. Each application in OS X runs in its own protected space. It's impossible for the older versions to interfere. Good point, but one of these days, if I ever sit down with you at NAMM or some other good meeting point, remind me to tell you about gallons of JD in Nashville at the Opryland Hotel one February back in 1987.James Steele wrote:I defy anyone to get 3 STEPS on a gallon of Jack Daniels.Shooshie wrote:and is getting 3 miles to a gallon of Jack Daniels.
Not to mention the preferences files.toodamnhip wrote:I mean that the plug ins ARE in one place and I would suppose there is a good chance they have been updated? Or some other central library component.
I don't know if you can safely say all central compnents to dp are compartmented...
The app folders are, but the central library aspects are common I believe..but correct me if I am wrong..
We put one in there just for you Gary. You now have a switchable preference in DP5 so that soloed tracks will continue to follow mute automation (or not).Timeline wrote: When I hear of updates that fit my needs I will jump in.
