There are many, many posts on this. "Not Supported" does not, by itself mean it won't work. It does mean that MOTU FW devices are not supported. Those units use the exact same drivers as the ones on that list but MOTU will not list current drivers for the non-supported units. The reason is that MOTU no longer wants to devote resources ($$$) to answer questions, deal with TechLinks etc. This has been coming for a long time.

Intel never supported FW; Apple stopped in 2011–13 depending on the Mac. The 2011 iMac has a FW port but it's really a TB–FW adapter. Fortunately, Thunderbolt supports enough of the FW spec (except bus power) that nearly all devices will work through the proper adapters although I have read that CueMix requires Rosetta 2 (I do not know this for certain).

If I can get my M1 away from my spouse this weekend, gonna do a bit of testing on my own with my 828mkII and MTP AV. I expect them to work over Rosetta since they work fine over Monterey on my iMac Pro but I want to see what does and doesn't happen when I go Native.

I installed the MOTU Audio Installer Mac v89555 | Oct. 13, 2021 MacOS 12, macOS 11 driver for the 828mk3 Hybrid on my M1 today.

When you open the zip file, you'll see a Read Me First - M1 Apple Silicon Driver Installation Instructions. This gives you the instructions for booting into Recovery, modifying the Security settings Utilities and dealing with the Security & Privacy settings after you reboot and install. Also found here:

Ignore the following: NOTE: This only applies to the interfaces mentioned above. if you do not have one of those devices that otherwise uses the MOTU Audio Installer.

When done, reboot again. Turn the unit on, open Audio MIDI Setup.app to make sure it's visible.

I reset my 828mkII to factory specs, connected to my M1 MBAir through the string of adapters: FW400–800 cable into the Apple FW–TB Adapter into the Apple TB2–TB3 Adapter.

Opened DP 11.04 both Native and in Rosetta 2. Everything worked as it should. I did not test CueMix since I never use it.

I should get my M1 mini this week, with Big Sur. I hope FW only will work also. I never had a chance to use Digital Performer bc I never had

CueMIx is super useful on live stage recording, and setting mono-stereo channels, but I barely used it in recent years too.

If you do not have a FW800 port on your unit, you’ll need a FW400–800 cable or adapter.

What you won’t need is a TB cable of any kind. The two adapters plug one into the other and the Mac. I used them into my iMac Pro so they were already available to me.

When installing the driver, a large number of windows opened up on my M1. You have to close them all and then you can make the changes in System Preferences/Security and Privacy.

Just a question: Is that right, we need the cascade adapters combo of 100$ to make it work... I'm really starting to guess if it's not time to sell my Mk2 and give up...
What are your personal opinions?? It's a lot of money for something that is already crashing a lot under windows 10 as never before... I'm just guessing if it's been left out of support and I should worry that it could not work 100% under Monterey as well...

$29+$49 = $78 last I checked and the answer is yes, you need both to connect any FW interface to a TB3/4 Mac. There is no workaround. If you don’t have a FW400–800 adapter or cable, you’ll need one of those as well.

OTOH, I’ve got mine working and I’ve detailed the steps. The driver is rock solid.

Update-- the process described above works great, but that FW/USB driver is no longer available. Use this one instead. It got my M1 iMac playing well with my Microbook II. Haven't tried my 8pre es in awhile. Will do that soon.

That’s the same driver I recommended earlier. It’s available for download under any currently supported device that uses the MOTU Audio Installer.

Catalina was the last MacOS that runs on any FW equipped Mac without a hack. Those last FW equipped Macs were the 2012 Mac Pro and 2012 MacBook Pro. 2011 iMacs and 2010 MacBooks OS support ended with High Sierra.

It doesn't matter. Again, Apple does not support FireWire now — and hasn't since 2012.

If your RME unit does not work through the two Apple adapters hooked up to Thunderbolt, that's RME not writing TB drivers. Check their available TB drivers just as we have had to with MOTU. If it can be made to work now, that should not change in the near future. Giving us a "the sky is falling" warning because of something that affects RME doesn't change things either.

BTW, MOTU does not support FW devices in any form. Again, it does not matter because we've figured it out. There's no reason to believe this will change with the next MacOS.

All this may change someday if a future version of Thunderbolt is no longer backwards compatible with TB 1-4 or, more likely, Apple drops support for TB someday in the future—it will be hardware first followed by a three-year transition (same as dropping FW) to conform with California laws and international treaties. Thunderbolt is an Intel Spec, never has been Apple. FireWire was a PPC Consortium spec that, luckily, TB supports about 75% but Apple dropped it in 2012. In any case, that day is not today.

Just registered an account here to say thanks to everyone and especially @mikehalloran, and to confirm this still works fine on the latest macOS Ventura (13.4).

Got a Mac mini M2 Pro recently and thought now I really had to say goodbye to my trusty old 828mk3 Firewire. I simply followed the instructions and installed the drivers (I already had the two adapters) and it’s working fine!!

Running on macOS Ventura 13.4 as I speak. CueMix FX app works fine as well! Good times. So happy with this. Feels like my trusty old 828 got a new lease on life.
