+80 db is not enough? Are these people using mics or just shouting at the hard drive?

First of all, that's hilarious. And yes, sometimes there are tracks with pitifully low levels (from clients or other sources, obviously).
I didn't know if that gain option would cause clipping-- if the sample's level exceeds zero.
My use of normalizing is always related to exporting soundbites as samples, tracks, mixes, MP3s, archives, etc.

One reason why I got in the habit of doing this in DSP-Q. Well there's another thing I was totally oblivious to. I've used Bite Gain but I've always selected it from the Audio Menu. Now I have another time saver. Thanks HC.
