www.yousendit.com - someone else on this board recommended it a while back and it worked great - fast and easy. I also tried using iDisk and it was incredibly slow, basically unuseable.

Yeah, I use an idisk and it is slow but it works.
You send it is cool but I'm always afraid of public servers.
The last thing I need is someone intercepting my files.....just my personal paranoia

I've been using streamload.com and setting up password-protected public folders. It's been plenty secure enough for me.

It's a good chance that somewhere along the lines of transmission that your files will end up passing through a PC or UNIX system, so if you're sending Mac-specific files like DP projects and SDII audio files you should probably ZIP or StuffIt them so they don't lose their resource forks.

If you're on a Mac with OSX...

...Control-click the file(s) or folder(s) you want to compress, then select "Create archive" from the menu that appears. This will ZIP them up.

The recipient need only double-click on this newly-created ZIP file, and it'll extract automatically.

BTW: If you have a multi-button mouse, you can use right-click rather than control-click. Works the same, only one-handed.

What app does that use?
Is there a way to set prefs for that method?

I use Stuffit and set prefs to No Compression.

I don't know. It's part of the OS, but I assume they license the algorithm from someone.

If you run an "get info" on these ZIP files, they're set to open using BOMArchiveHelper (whatever that is). And they'll open via StuffIt too.

Anyway, I've found that when I zip, then unzip using this method the pre-zip and post-zip files match in size down to the byte. So, it's lossless -- seemingly. But, the ZIP file itself appears smaller -- until you run a "Get Info" and see it's the same approximate size as it's unzipped contents (although not to the exact byte).

Hmm...

Maybe a techie can step in with some better science here than I can muster?

Doesn't seem to be. There's minimal help reference supplied for this function.

You know what.......I know this sounds stupid...And slow......And expensive......But to insure against any incompatibilties or "mangles" or interceptions ( I'm sure there are loads of folks out there who are smarter than me about computers who would love to steal my stuff)

Just mail a project CD/DVD? Fed EX?
AND/Or hound MOTU about ditching SD2?
I know it's very frusterating..

I think password-protected FTPs are the way to go, FWIW.

There is an article about this and more in the February issue of Recording Magazine.
I did't have time to read the whole thing at Borden's rack.
Basically is some guys use DP to work through internet.
