RAM allocation in DP

Post by Rick Averill »

Hello, all. Is there anyway in Mac Mojave to allocate more RAM to Digital Performer and specifically to the ARIA app? I have 40 gigs on my Mac, and my activity monitor shows only about 2% is being used when I play a sequence in DP. If I get too many voices loaded, it either refuses to load more, or I start getting playback problems.

I know that, eons ago, you could specify how much RAM was allocated to a particular app, but I was under the impression that that sort of thing was done automatically these days. It seems a pit to have all this RAM and not be able to use it.

I would appreciate any advice you nice people can give me on this.

I don't think RAM allocation is possible any more on a Mac.

Two things I don't understand:

1) 2% of 40G? that's 800 Meg?
2: your signature says you're using Windows

I believe you can change the RAM allocation on the ARIA "Settings" page. If you're using Kontakt, there are similar pre-load buffer size settings.

Thank you for your kind replies.

Regarding my signature, I have been migrating from Windows back to Mac, and had not changed my signature on this board. That has now been done. I apologize for any confusion that it might have caused.

Speaking of confusion, that's what I have regarding my RAM situation. In an attempt to be more specific about what I'm saying, I have posted a number of screen captures here:
https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipN ... 4Yz7im3U_X
It shows the resources of my Mac, the activity monitor while playing a DP sequence (if I'm reading it correctly, it shows less than 2% of RAM being used), and a couple of the error messages I get. I hope this is more explanatory of my problem.

Regarding the suggestion about changing RAM allocation in the ARIA settings, I'm trying that out. Thank you for that suggestion.

I just feel like 40G of RAM should enable me to do more. Again, any help will be much appreciated.

Okay, I changed the RAM allocation in the ARIA stand-alone app to 128MB, the maximum it allowed. I saved that and then opened my sequence in DP. The instantiations I have of ARIA still show 512MB and for some reason won't let me change it there.

I just had a chance to try this. ARIA AU plugin lets me choose a RAM allocation up to 16 Gs. Are you using the latest Player (1.959) and Engine (1.960)?

Thanks for responding. I'm using the ARIA app that I downloaded from Make Music last week. I'm assuming it's the latest one. Here is a screenshot.

It also shows where I'm trying to change the RAM allocation. I'm probably doing it wrong. Should I be doing it another way?

Sorry, but your photos are 404 on my end. One needs to just click on the numerical field for a drop down menu.
