Don't know if it was me, but if so, so sorry Monkey.

It is my understanding that, to date, there are only two plugins that use AVX, Massive X and another one, and the other one offers AVX and non-AVX versions.

OTOH, the original Massive will continue to work, no problem, and there is a massive amount of other content in Komplete!

For future reference, there are occasional significant discount windows that NI opens to Komplete. When such openings occur, it is then the time to purchase. For a few days, the upgrade I purchased was $300 across the web. It is back to $600 now.

Are you sure? My understanding is that AVX is available on all post 2011 processors. Did you try the terminal command I posted above?

Code: Select all

sysctl -a | grep machdep.cpu.features

No AVX on any cheesegrater Mac Pros, unless, of course, you somehow got your hands on a 7,1...

Thanks Sir Markus.

This only applies to upgrades 'though AFAIK, unfortunately. The price of entry is always gonna be super-steep and I can't get around that, can I?

Yeah, I ran 2 variations of the command and studied the results carefully. Definitely no go.

I heard somewhere that at least one of the 2012 models would support it if the CPU's haven't been upgraded to 5680 / 5690s, but even if that were the case, it'd be ridiculous to pop my 4-core 2.4GHz chips back into my machine when it's currently running 2 x 6-core 3.33GHz ones.

Thanks mate.

I'm not saying it DOESN'T do those things (I actually haven't tried it yet), but that they should have largely left much of it alone. I told myself that I was only going to purchase one new wavetable synth this year, it was between:

- Zebra2
- Serum
- Pigments
- Massive X

Serum went MPE, so that made the decision insanely easy. Do I like Serum better than Massive? No, can't say I do, but it gave me the feature I most needed. All I really wanted was a true random LFO and MPE. Serum gave me one, MassiveX gave me neither. I'll nab Zebra at some point because it has 4 random LFOs, great for sound design work.

I’d be very surprised if this were the case Monkey. AVX instructions were not included in any processor that predated Sandy Bridge, and no 5,1 works with Sandy Bridge CPUs.

I'm not terribly upset about it, I always knew at some point the 5,1 was going to become a VEP server and I was going to switch back to using a laptop as the main machine. Typing this on a 2012 MacBook Pro that can do AVX. If people are curious, the reason NI are doing this is mostly because probably AVX allows them twice as many voices as SSE etc. The Legend is a Moog clone that does 4 voices on non AVX machines and 8 on AVX machines. From what I've read online AVX is able to process larger chunks of data that pay off for digital audio etc. NI also have a long history of slash and burn so I wasn't surprised they were the first to just cut non AVX machines out.

What about the 6,1? The 2013-Present model I bought 2 years ago?

UPDATE: N/m, you guys are talking about the cheese grater. I sold that years ago, so I'm good.
