Massive X released today — won’t run on the Mac Pro

Post by mikehalloran »

Like other Komplete 12 owners, I got the email that the long promised Massive X upgrade dropped today.

I came across this on Mac Rumors:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/bu ... x.2187752/

People are upgrading CPUs on the 5.1. I’ve asked if any of the upgrade options from Intel will work to add AVX compatibility.

Bummer. I don't use Massive very often, but I still don't like the way this is going....

The thing is, I'm 63, semi-retired from production, and probably never going to buy another Mac. So if this upgraded 5,1 won't run it, I don't need it.

Didn't catch this before... appears Massive X is the only NI product requiring AVX. Reviewing the NI Forum, the company rep offers no hope that Massive X will ever be able to run on a non-AVX CPU. Having just sprung for Complete Ultimate Collectors edition via an upgrade from Complete Ultimate 10, I am slightly disheartened, but there is a lot more stuff I will be able to use in the upgrade, and so we press on with the 5,1 Mac Pro!

The version of Massive that was still current as of yesterday will work. If Sweetwater is shipping media, that’s the version it will have.

Yes, I have that one, and all continue to use it! But it would have been fun to explore NI's long-promised latest and greatest.

Indeed. I am really bummed as the promise of a free a Massive X “tipped the scales” in my decision to upgrade from K10U. (I already had a lot of the newer stuff in K12U.) I swear I don’t remember the AVX requirement when they were first hawking the new Komplete, but I could have missed it.

But hey, with Bitwig’s Grid, VCV Rack, and Phase Plant all in the wild and NOT requiring AVX, I have plenty to keep me busy. :headbang:

I’m hoping the next Kontakt or Reaktor does not go this route though...

I was wondering about this too. Does anyone recall NI mentioning this detail anywhere when they were selling us on Komplete 12?

This AVX requirement is a new rub. I knew eventually there'd be MacOS that wouldn't be compatible with my 5,1 MP, but I didn't see this coming.

Apparently this dates to November 2018, and no, it's not obvious:

Oh, well. There goes the class-action lawsuit. Though even if I had seen this page somehow, I hadn't heard of AVX until yesterday.

Are there other plugins/VIs out there that require AVX I wonder? ....if not, there will be I reckon

So, the dumb obvious question is: which Macs have AVX CPUs? When did Apple start supplying those? Safe to assume my 5.1 will NOT have AVX capability?

Seriously, at this point I would wait out Massive X. Yeah, a lot of hard feelings for NI, and I think well deserved. There's a lot of reviews out there ranging from fan-base swooning to some nit-picky slagging. After spending several days with the demo, I'm inclined to side with the intelligent criticisms. Really, I think that MX is half baked and rushed out. By the time NI irons it out, you might already have a new computer.

Can't say I'm infinitely thrilled with the new design, and I'm a huge Massive fan. I feel like they needlessly reinvented the wheel, when a fairly straightforward update with new features would have been perfect:

- scaleable UI
- true random LFOs
- user editable wavetables
- upgraded DSP
- some new effects and filter types

Massive remains my favorite synth workflow, and it spawned an entire generation of similarly "non-vintage" UIs. Maybe Massive X will turn out to be amazing, but had they simply upgraded the old system, they would have made users a lot happier.

I asked here back in January or thereabouts about the compatibility, and was assured there would be no issue with my 2012 Cheese Grater™.

Oh, how wrong the kind contributors were. I can't find the thread but well remember my asking about it 'cause I'd heard rumblings that it wouldn't run on some Macs. Again, I was assured that it'd run on any Mac as long as the OS was within-spec.

Pretty bummed-out. Ordered KU12 last year. Still on lay-buy, but it's really disappointing to know that what was to be one of the highlights for me won't even run. Aarrgghh!
