Making Sense of Takes & Comping in DP

Post by lampfilmusic »

MOTU would seem to have an odd implementation of this (c.f. chapter 48, p611 of the manual)…

1. To create a Composite track, you have to invoke the ‘Show takes’ command. Thus ‘Show takes’ does not just ‘show takes’, but it ALSO creates a new Composite track (Comp 2).

2. In the ‘Takes’ sub-menu of the Sequence Editor window, there is no ‘Delete Comp’ command. To delete a Comp one has to understand that MOTU see a Comp as a take in itself (even though it is not). A Comp is a collage from takes and not a separate take in itself.

...To delete a Comp, select it (e.g. Comp 2) in the Takes sub-menu, and then select ‘Delete take’. The comp (and not the take that it holds) will be deleted. :?

As the manual also points out, when a comp is a take, it can be used in other comps. But to do routine comps you don't really need to know any of this stuff. Just "show takes" and the first listed take appears as the comp, and dragging the comp tool across sections of the other takes is all you have to do.

I like MOTU's approach; I have had situations where I comp a vocal, then have the vocalist back in to make some changes. I create a COMP1 COPY take and comp the new parts to that. I can return to original COMP1 without COMPlication.

I love the Comping implementation too..... except I wish the takes rolled out under the Comp track from the most recent to the oldest. It's usually the last takes that are the main contenders....especially if you've been building the track as you go (eg. by Duplicating Take and moving on to the next phrase, line....or....gulp.... word ( :

So I'd prefer to see the most recent take at top just underneath the Comp

I recognise, though, that it could be preferable to have the first take top-most....an option would be ideal

Best to all
