Spontaneous restart

My computer spontaneously shut down and restarted three times yesterday, and once a couple of months ago, but so far not today...yet.

Wha...?

If that ever happened before it's been years and I dont remember it. I have a "report" that was generated after the restart, but I dont have a clue what it means. I wont put it here since it's quite long, but if any of my really, really, really clever people here wouldnt mind looking at it and telling me what they think might have happened, I'd appreciate it (private message of some kind?). Would like to avoid a possible calamity in the (possibly near) future.

That reminds me of my old PCs...

It sounds like a bad stick of RAM to me. Let's see what Mike Halloran says about it.

Step one is to confirm or eliminate a hardware problem. How long since you've changed the battery and cleaned the heatsink vents?

The NV RAM battery should be changed every 5 years or so. The OE is a BR2032 but the standard CR2032 is fine in these and lasts just as long. Believe it or not, having no battery is better than a low one (your settings wouldn't be saved, however). If you can't remember when, change it.

The heatsink vents are known to clog with dust on these causing a thermal shutdown. You won't see this without looking at the side.

Have you verified that the power cord and any power strip etc. is good and snug? It happens...

Yes, there are potential software issues but let's start with the basics.

You are headed for a complete breakdown of the machine immediately get the computer cleaned. Dust is the culprit. If you can’t get it to a shop, take action and get a vacuum along with some type of artist brush to get the dirt out make sure you clean the video card and from now on put the computer in a well vented area

Battery changed within living memory but the thing hasnt been cleaned...ever! I'll try that. There must be quite a bit of filth in there!

Just saw this. That's another possibility.

Although TechTool Pro is my go-to RAM tester, there are other ways to suss it out.

If you purchased AppleCare and still have the DVD, you received a copy of TechTool Deluxe. This can be updated to the version that runs on Lion for free. It was discontinued when OS 10.8x was released.

I had this problem for 18 months. Things I tried were
- removing startup apps
- booting up in safe mode
- unplugging every peripheral and adding them back one by one
- used built in audio instead of MOTU PCI
- reset PSU (and changed power cable)
- reset PRAM
- tested every stick of RAM multiple times in multiple slots
- Apple Hardware Test
- cleaned all dust out of computer
- rebuilt boot HD
- googled a zillion articles on my issue.

Nothing worked

Finally I got it checked by a local Mac tech who thought it may have been the logic board, he swapped a known good one in, and it ran fine. So my logic board was farkakte, ordered a replacement from eBay, he put it in, my Mac is now back to being awesome.

Well I sure hope it aint the logic board. Isnt it time to get a new computer when that goes? Isnt that an expensive fix?

Anyway, I opened it up and cleaned it as best I could. There *might* have been a little dust in there...haha. Took everything out I could....drives, cards, ram....and vacuumed eeeeever so gently. Cleaned up the heat sink as much as possible but it's a bit hard to get to, on this model anyway. It's a ten year old box...yoikes!...and it's not spotless, but back to the level of dust that might have been in it, oh, say 6-7 years ago.

Much to my surprise, when I put it all back together it started up fine. I was sure I was going knock something off it's perch in there.

The battery in less than 5 years old and it's in a reasonably well ventilated spot.

The start ups have been intermitent...of course; the hardest problems to fix...none for a few days, one today (before clean up), so we'll see going forward. Ram check if it happens again, I guess.

Well, I was going to wait a month to report back, just to be sure the cleaning had worked, and I almost made it. Just had the same spontaneous restart problem. Rats!!

I hesitate to include this since it's so long, but there are many clever people here who might know what it means. This is the report I got.

Haven’t gone thru the thread again. Can you or have you tested your RAM? If not, I’d try removing some sticks and try starting.

If you google AppleMCEDriver and Fbd memory error, both of which appear in the error log, in addition to RAM issues, you'll also see references to problems associated with what appears to be your Mac and some graphics cards.
