My technique for more accurate Quickscribe rhythms is to manually quantize (100% strength) not only the problem measure, but the measures around it. This seems to correct any misinterpreted triplets into 8ths/16ths.
This without having to alter note length.

Thanks, Greg. That’s exactly what I do when I’m exporting to Finale or (occasionally) printing directly out of DP, but that does not work when I’m trying to use QS to give me a “Composer’s View” as I record and want to maintain the feel of the recorded takes.

As I mentioned before, I make a copy of the track so I have one track for playback (if that's needed) and a 2nd track for notation.

I quantize 100% and include releases (duration). Then I open the piano roll editor and do a pass of adjusting durations. There are cases where a rhythm is written with different notation than it would be played- e.g., I might like to see a quarter note, even though an 8th note & 8th rest might be more accurate-- it isn't how some rhythms would be written. And that might mean that I add some staccato marks by hand if necessary.

On a side note, after a recent big scoring project, I've finally (unintended pun) gotten a proper trial by fire in Finale. I appreciated the ease with which some tasks were done, but found quite a few processes to be quite tedious, clunky or just plain wrong. I'd call Finale ambitious but unfinished.

I’m doing some charts for a gospel group this week with a lot of broken triplets over 4/4 time. You have to trick Finale into doing one on the last beat of a bar.

Thanks all. Yes to all of the work arounds, I use them too. When polyphony moves from 2 voice to 3 or other changes to the number of simultaneous voices. It gets tricky, but quantizing all notes to consistent lengths is a work around. Has anyone tried using those fonts, music fonts to input slashes or drum notation?

I find that if I put Quickscribe up on one monitor and "piano-roll" on the other, I can just drag the length of notes in the piano-roll that Quickscribe is having problems with.

On a completely different note, I REALLY wish Motu would get Quickscribe to catch up with what other DAWs like Cubase have had for years.

Not Finale or Sibelius deep, but just some of the very basics to do a quick chart.

I often do like the other post said, I'll print out a page with the notes and then add the rest with a pencil.

So guys I have a question similar to this thread. I have been away from this site for a few years and I just logged back on trying to post a question and found that something has changed with this site where it used to be an easy click to add a new discussion and now I can't seem to find it. Can you help me with this first and then my question is about a simple rhythm that I'm playing into DP at 4/4 time. I'm simply playing in an eighth note to dotted sixteenth note and it is interpreting it every time as just two eighth notes throughout the piece. I have tried to quantize it in different ways to no success of ever getting it to show what it should. I've slowed down the speed of the beat thinking that would help it interpret better, but no luck. Is there anyone that can tell me what is going on with this. It just seems that this shouldn't be this hard for this program. Thank you all for your help in advance. Dan

I also notice guys that many times it will show an eighth note to a dotted eighth note as a quarter and an eighth note with a bracket over it and a 3 in it. It's like it is set somehow to think in terms of triplets. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An "eighth to dotted 16th" is probably just seen as a couple 8ths. Did you mean dotted 8th- and 16th?

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it can be useful to quantize notes (and releases) to see if DP will display what you intend. If you need to preserve your original feel, then use two tracks: a playback track and a notation track (which can be muted).

The bad news is that sometimes even if you have the EXACT rhythm you want, quantized down to the exact ticks, DP may still display it wrong. Then you have to start messing with things to get DP to "change its mind".

That's where having a proper notation program has its advantages.

Here's something else that I noticed. I simply tried to play in 4 quarters notes on the beat and it showed up as eighth note eighth rest eighth note eighth rest eighth note eighth rest instead of just 4 simple quarter notes. It acts to me like it is already setup in some way to not see the correct notation.

First of all, it is possible you played something closer to 8th notes with 8th rests-- especially if you were repeating notes of the same pitch. If your note-release is closer to the upbeat tick than it is to the next downbeat tick, DP will interpret what you played as shorter notes with rests between, because that is what you really played. To get quarter notes, you have to play the notes kind of tenuto.

When I am preparing a track for notation, I open the piano roll of the track I want to notate, I quantize attacks and releases. Then I set the edit grid to the same value as the quantize grid. Then I go through the track and extend the note durations of notes that are shorter than I want them to appear. So, if there are 8th notes followed by 8th rests, and I want them to display as quarter notes, I select them all and drag their ass-ends to make them quarters.

When I'm sequencing for arrangements, quickscribe notation, I've gotten good at playing the parts in so they will have the right durations. I don't expect DP to guess whether I want a dotted-quarter followed by an 8th rest, or a half-note. This means I don't play it they way I would interpret it, I play it the way I expect to see it. There is a pretty important difference. It's not fool-proof, so that's why I go through the final step of quantizing starts/ends, then going through an edit pass. It doesn't take very long, now that I've got a quick flow for those kinds of edits.

DP's lack of staccato marks or other articulations doesn't help matters. I have to write all those in by hand-- or go over to Finale if I care enough.
