HELP! DP 7.24 crashes...RESOLVED

Post by cuttime »

...on a previously rock solid 16G 10.6.8 i7 iMac that seems to check out on everything else. Using Broadcast Wave 24 bit file formats crashes via the transport on either PLAY or RECORD every single time on old or new projects! Did a complete uninstall/reinstall, trashed preferences, repaired permissions, disabled/enabled plugs, checked drives, did the chicken dance. If I choose another audio file format (SDII, for example), all is OK. Of course I'll take it up with MOTU but I need help now! TIA! :shake:

Well this is way out of left field and I totally am pulling it out of my ass, butt (pun intended) why not trash ALL the com.apple.QuickTime plists in both the system and the user libraries? Doesn't QT pretty much determine how files are seen by the system?

Might do nothing but it couldn't hurt and nobody else seems to be around. Probably an exercise in futility, but since you seem desperate, I just thought I'd tell you what I'd do.

Good luck.

Oh, wait! Maybe also try resetting your PRAM? Startup the Mac holding down the CMD-OPT-p-r keys and wait until you hear the startup chime three times.

Thanks MLC, I haven't tried the QT or PRAM hailmarys yet. Running the Hardware test now and it could take a while...

I doubt it's a hardware issue since other formats are working. I'm guessing, since it's brave, that it has something to do with the timestamp, which might well be a QT issue.

I'd play with making the default format aiff and importing a bwav, and play around with the conversion settings. A call to MOTU may be in order.

I think you hit the nail on the proverbial head.

File associations, but not a solution yet...

Still working on this; haven't gotten through to MOTU yet. The solution is staring me in the face with that BW extension, but I'm too stupid to figure out the solution. Gonna start looking at Time Machine files... :?

Update: Lorne at MOTU responded in a very punctual manner and suggested the old "new user account try". Well, to my chagrin it worked, but when go back to my admin account it is the same old same old. He basically bounced it in Apple's lap, but the thought of bringing it up to them is daunting. Any other thoughts?

Yeah, but you're not gonna like it.

At times my system in the past has gone a little wonky with oddball things. What I sometimes do as a last act of desperation is buy a nice, new, BIG, clean hard drive and reinstall the entire system from scratch.

That's a multi-day project but the last time I had to do it due to "issues" across several apps was maybe 5 years ago. Since then I have had zero problems in that regard. Sure, things go bad and we fix them, but when the use account gets screwed up, or (as happened to me) the permissions get completely screwed up (I managed to do that myself) a new drive and OS install can be a very good thing.

You probably won't do that and I don't blame you if you don't, but if you do, DO NOT use a cloned copy or Migration Assistant to install the user folder or OS. You can drag documents and project files, etc., but copying the user folder (especially the Preferences folder) and the OS folders, regardless of the method used, could easily copy the problem and you won't have solved anything.

A 3TB internal drive might run about $160. A nifty SSD drive will surely cost a bit more, but as a main OS drive could be a nice addition.

You could also use the new user account you created as your main user and try migrating files over as well, but that is almost as much work as redoing the system if you do it carefully.

Yep, you're preaching to the choir. Let's hope it doesn't get to that point, yet. As it is right now I can deal with workarounds, as much as I hate them. Let's just hope I don't screw anything up further trying to troubleshoot the situation (like I know I'm going to...).

Happy ending! Just got off the phone with AppleCare and they trashed all of my caches and other preferences and fixed the problem! They were unable to locate the exact pref or cache but thought it was related to an audio driver. :woohoo:
