MachFive 3 Discoveries...

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

I already owned the ExtremeFX card for the UVI Workstation, and while I loved it and it was really a lot of fun to play with, finding the component (key mapped) sounds of a patch was a matter of hit and miss. There was no visual map (least not that I ever saw in the UVI player) and no easy way to precisely modulate, mix and adjust each component, patch, or sample.

So I'm playing with MachFive 3 tonight and going thru the patches in ExtremeFX. I noticed in the LIST menu, I could not only isolate and process each layer of each component, as well as solo or mute each layer, but when I got to the "Scenes" I noticed that the samples were listed along with their mapped keys.

What that does is open the door to very precise editing and extremely easy sample location and selection. Not only that, but you can sort the samples by name or key map. How cool is that!

What I am finding out about M5-3 is that not only is it deep, but that it can and will breathe new life into most of my other instruments. Just the UVI banks by themselves will be like getting several GB of new, very useful sounds.

----

Auditioning and loading samples couldn't be any easier. Looping is fast and clicks and pops at the ends of loops are easy to see and eliminate.

---

The arpeggiator is truly a work of art in and of itself.

---

Modulation and FX are clean and the Analysis plugin provides great visual feedback of what you are hearing in the patch.

---

I haven't been this excited about a software or hardware instrument in a very long time - probably since getting my V-Synth which it would appear will not be necessary for much longer. What else...? oh yeah...

Is this a CPU issue? I'm on an ancient laptop, and won't probably be upgrading until the macbook pros are 8 core at my salary rate lately!

I'm running it on an almost 2 year old imac i5 on 8GB of RAM with no problems.
In 32 bit mode though.

I love it :) But I'm still trying to get to grips with all it can do.

I'd love more detailed and in depth video tutorials.

Here's something I did with just the samples from Machfive, for anyone that's curious. The acoustic guitar sounds are amazing.

After I discovered Ircam synthesis (which sounds amazing) I also discovered that's
what was dragging my computer to it's knees with mach five v3..
Soon as I turned that off..it was fine

My biggest disappointment is that my Kontakt 4 factory library, and other purchased libraries, won't open in Machfive 3, even though they are authorised on the same computer. What is the use of compatibility with Kontakt instruments if my library can't be used!

Kontakt 4 libraries open fine in MachFive 3 here. Check your configuration again.

Definitely won't open, checked it on both Mac Pro and MacBook Pro - same result. I do have Kontakt 5 authorised on the same devices, but I was reading from the Kontakt 4 library. That's all I can think of.
