Re: Best Plugins? TC powercore firewire?
Wonder --
I don't know if this'll help you or confuse you, but here are two variables to weigh in your decision:
1. Do you want EQs and compressors that will color your sound as you use them? Or do you want these tools to be as transparent as possible?
2. Do you have any needs for additional plugs that come with these packages? For example, if you'd like a decent amp sim or modulation effects or channel strip ability with your EQ/compressor/reverb pack, then that can influence your purchase.
In short, I'm trying to put your mix needs before the disparate opinions of others because all of the mentioned plugs do the same thing, generally speaking, but do it differently . And some ship with different side orders, if you will, which might appeal to you.
To give you a personal example: I like different compressors for different uses (and I'm by no means a connoisseur). For me, color-adding comps like VintageBurner can sound great on drums, bass guitar and organs, but transparent comps like TrackPlug are more suitable for guitars and horns.
Dig what I'm saying?

Re: Best Plugins? TC powercore firewire?
i dig.....
mostly im looking for
1. a KILLER comp/limiter for vocals, drums, bass.
2. AWESOME reverb for vocals, drums
I do 90% acoustic instrument stuff (neo soul, r&b). SOME stuff with RMX drums and stuff....I dont do techno or rock so maybe that will help in helping me....?

The following UAD-1 plugs will make you smile big time.Originally posted by wonder:

LA-2A compressor (Great for vocals, anything really)
Fairchild Compressor (Great for drums & bass, very characteristic sound)
Precision Limiter (Awesome transparent limiter for mastering mixes)
Plate 140 (just like using the real thing...awesome plate 140 sound, great for vocals and guitar, drums, etc..)

Okay. My two cents then...Originally posted by wonder:

Given the neo soul / R&B tip, I'd suggest the UAD-1 for EQ/comp stuff because it emulates the warmth of vintage gear. I take it you probably want "warmth" or "fatness" over, say, "shimmer" or "gleen," at least if you have to pick one over the other.
And, if you can afford it, get the UltraPak for the Plate verb (or pick it up a la carte later).
Oh, and if you want that "real room" verb sound, the best plug-in bet is probably Altiverb.

Wavearts at http://www.wavearts.com/ makes a couple
of very nice plugins.
1: They sound good
2: They are reasonably priced
4: The cpu-drain is very low
5: You can download and try them out for 30-days
6: They are fairly easy to use.
Quite a few professionals actually use them -
including me of course.

Re: Best Plugins? TC powercore firewire?
It is much more expensive to upgrade a Project Pak to have the same plugs as the Ultra Pak.Originally posted by wonder:

Project pack is $399 at jrrshop.com
Add all the plugs seperately to make it the equivalent of an Ultra Pak will cost you an additional $1380.
The Ultra Pak is $1199.95 right from the start. And it gives you all the plugs available right now...except the new Roland ones coming out in the next update.
The project Pak is really designed for users to cheaply add additional DSP cards to their system, as you can add up to 4 cards in one computer which will work in tandem on all the plugs you have authorized.
The Ultra Pak is really the way to go when buying into the UAD-1 for the first time.

Re: Best Plugins? TC powercore firewire?
Or the Studio Pak for around $900 or so. Doesn't have the Plate or Pultec Pro, but still has the 1176, Fairchild and LA2A (as well as a few other goodies). Might be all you need.Originally posted by Brian W. Ralston:

Re: Best Plugins? TC powercore firewire?
First of all, I'm using a daul 2Ghz G5 and Powercore kills my processor...that is BS that it takes the load off. Also, be wary, their customer support is bad...I had a painful experience with them and will never give them another penny. Go with Waves!!
Re: Best Plugins? TC powercore firewire?
at this point...its waves vs. uad to get my dollar.
I'm leaning towards UAD for the LA2A and 1176
