Re: New Mac Mini
I'm on a pretty tight deadline these days, so don't really have time to set up a new Mac right now, but am hoping to be able to do so by mid to late July.
If no new MacPros by then, I will buy the new Mac Mini Server, for two 7200rpm drives, one of which could probably be swapped for an SSD at some point.
The built-in power supply, and quieter/cooler operation, is a big plus in my opinion. And I feel two internal 7200 rpm drives is a better option than going with a MacBook Pro, even with its eSATA connection.
Note that Leopard will not run on this new Mac Mini. Some may shy away for this reason. I haven't paid much attention to the state of Snow Leopard compatibility for plug-ins, VI's, etc.
I too am curious about the answer to Frodo's question regarding the Firewire bus speed on this new Mini.

Just kidding! It was too easy. Seriously, it would make a good machine for someone to check email. If you have for example an elderly relative that's technophobic you could set it up to automatically boot into Mail and maybe teach them how to send and receive email?

Re: New Mac Mini
James & newrigel: door stop or music server - good ideas. I've already set my mom up with a G5 iMac. She is technologically challenged at 88 years of age. What I plan to do is set the extra mini up as another archiving machine. All I need is a keyboard and mouse/trackball. I have about 1500 total audio tapes I want to digitize. Big project.

Re: New Mac Mini
I just got one to replace my PowerBook G4 which I used for remote recording and I am very happy with it.
I did a test using the Metric Halo MIO Console Record Panel and an MH 2882 interface and I was able to record 18 tracks of 96/24 audio to the internal hard drive without a hitch.

Re: New Mac Mini
I am keeping the G4 mini for more audio tape archiving. Both mini's do that now. So does the Mac Pro, the iMac, the Mac Book and the dual G4 wind tunnel. Yes I have a lot of tape decks - Denon 770R's - 6 of them and 4 other dual decks.
Just replaced the stock 2 gb memory in the new Mac Mini with 4 gb. Seems faster now. So I'll have to continue using the 8600 for the door stop, even though it also runs 10.4, albeit very slowly. Go figure. Doh!

Re: New Mac Mini
I am looking to replace my old 1.8 DP G-5 running DP 6.
I am looking at the new Mac Mini and wondering if this could do the job. I have never used virtual instruments before but I became handicapped last year and can no longer play them myself so I may be expanding my horizons in that arena.
How well does DP work on the current Minis and iMacs? Should I really be looking at a Mac Pro instead?

Re: New Mac Mini
I'm not sure if anyone noticed this, but I saw on Apple's website that the new Mac Mini spreads its USB ports across two busses. Has this always been the case? I have the feeling this is an enhancement.

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.
