Drive Genius Comparison

Post by inukshuk »

Hi all

I just discovered "Drive Genius" by Prosoft Engineering and would like any feedback on it from anyone using it. Especially in comparison to T.T.P, iDefrag, etc.

Thanks for the info/url.

The price seems OK.

Wonder if any one here at Unicornation is using that DiskUtility.

Are you using it?

Do you have the other programmes you mention in your post ?

At this time there seems to be a plethera of defragger and optimization programmes it sure makes my head hurt trying to decide who to buy.

Good topic: hope we get some input from the users of these programmes.

I use TTPro 404. I like it because it allows you to create a "virtual" drive ( they call it eDrive ). You can boot into this drive to do all your maintenance and repairs. It's like albeit better than running the programme from it's CD. In fact you should never do any file defragmentization/optimizations of your hard drives by running the programme from the CD.

Yes I have all of them and use them all. But I use mostly T.T.Pro 404. Disk Warrior only if TTP can't do the job, starting to use Genious and use iDefrag once in a while. And between Cocktail and Oynx, well Oynx has more options. But if you were to buy 1-2 I would say TTPro and Oynx. They all seem good but work a little differantly. The one that takes a very long time to do the job is iDefrag. The others are all much faster.
I've been using Alsoft products for years and have found the programmes reliable and lifesavers. DiskWarrior used to be their DiskExpress albeit it was also like TechToolPro.

As you are aware DiskWarrior is a one trick pony and it repairs/replaces DIRECTORIES, nothing else. I have found that my OS X breaks down when the DIRECTORY goes wonkey.

I use TTPro 404 because it can be programmed/scheduled to do maintenance and SMART hard drive checks.

I also have Cocktail and Macaroni because here again they can do the UNIX stuff in the background and/or when I leave the machine on but not doing music.

For now I will stay clear of iDefrag and Genious since I am not sure of their track record for working with TIGER.

I've just acquired a copy and their other programmes and going thru the paces with them.

Data Rescue seems like a good utility to have in the tool box.
