Replacing Fw port on 828

Post by timizere »

One of my 828mk3's fw ports has stopped working. the port is visibly broken, and although im not entirely sure how it happened it doesnt surprise me too much as i move my 828 about in a rack case a fair bit.

My question is; has anyone replaced one of the ports themselves and if so how hard is it? :D

also how long is motu's warrany? i should probs go down this route before hacking the unit to pieces....

cheers guys

That's a job I'd leave to someone else... like MOTU. Unless of course you do this all the time on hard drives and such and your equipped with a station. Why don't you just take the time to unplug things before you move (drag around) your rack? What do you do, just drag the rack of stuff around while it's all plugged in? If that's bad, I would imagine other things could be too... good thing you don't work around me.

If by port, you mean connector, it shouldn't be a difficult repair if you're experienced with PCB repair. If you haven't done much work on PCBs, I'd leave it to a pro. I've found that with such repairs finding the exact replacement part is often more difficult than the repair itself.

thanks so much for your very helpful response! I'll have you know my reason for moving my rack is for location recording, and all cables but one are propperly disconnected. The only cable that remains connected is for a pre amp in the same rack and cant be removed. I suspect this is what caused the damage.
Having contacted motu they told me a repair would cost £94 + vat. Guess it'll be staying broken then.

Where on a preamp can't you disconnect anything? And where does that specific stress come to play on the FW cable? Today, even the power cables can be disconnected from most units! This is the reason I don't buy used equipment! And I wouldn't take anyones advice in replacing the FW connector to the PCB unless you have a nice soldering station and years of experience doing this. Think you have some issues now, go ahead and try it! The time it takes to disconnect EVERYTHING so there are NO stress points pays off huge dividends in the end... as you've painfully found out.

It is the power chord and it is not removable. Not sure why im arguing with you, but as you are not being in the least bit helpful please leave and 'help' someone else. thanks.

I know a guy who has alot of experience with electronics so i'll get him to have a look. I agree getting the part could be an issue if it is specialised for the motu gear. thanks for all the genuine help from the rest of you!

FYI, if you buy an 828mk3 in North America, MOTU offers a two-year warranty for it. I think that's the same for interfaces bought in the EU, but I'm not sure.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.
