Re: mic and pre
You need a hardware compressor for tracking. Signal goes in to DP analog --> mic -> pre -> compressor ->A/D converter -> DP. I've never known a plug for a native system to be able to effect the signal before it hits the converter. I might be wrong. I've never done it. With a compressor this is what you want, primarily. You want to limit/color/compresses the signal BEFORE conversion.

Re: mic and pre
I never tried yet... but I remember something into the UAD-1 manual where it says something about use of the plugins tracking.
I'll check it out, and I'll try when I get a pre
Thank you for everything

No I mean the 312 (though the 512 is cool too). Check out Mercenary Audio they have the API 3124+ (4 channels of 312 pres in a 1 space rack).Originally posted by soof:
Sdemott: do you mean API 512? Didn't find a 312 anywhere![]()
What I like about the 312 is that you can get a lot of texture out of it, as well as just a god amount of smoothness when you don't want a lot of the color.

Hi HenryYou need a hardware compressor for tracking.

I tried with a UAD compressor and it works: just needed settings the MOTU buffer size at 64 to minimize latency.
The UA manual says that UAD latency is doubling the buffer value.

I've had a look to the API 3124: unfortunately it's out of budget. No I mean the 312 (though the 512 is cool too). Check out Mercenary Audio they have the API 3124+ (4 channels of 312 pres in a 1 space rack).
Tnx anyway

I'll try to find here a 512 to test with the GEFELL mic.
I've found a MILLENNIA TD-1 at a reasonable price, and at present seems to be the best choice in my list

Great!! You won't be sorry. Also good news about the UAD being able to use it to RECORD in addition to mix. I learn something new every day!Originally posted by soof:

The TD-1 is great. I found it was not only good with a ribbon mic [R84] but was amazing as a direct for P Bass direct into

True Systems are distributed in North America by Neuman.Originally posted by soof:

I don't need all 8 ins of the one you told me, for me a dual/stereo pre is more than enough![]()

Re: mic and pre
Last year, I posted the same question because I had some dough to blow and wanted to invest in a real nice preamp. Many of the folks on here gave me some good recommendations. I ended up going with the Summit MPC100A. I ended up liking it so much that I bought a 2nd one so I could do stereo overheads on drums. For my vocals, this preamp really made the difference that I was looking for, however, I would say that it isn't the optimal choice for clean, pristine reproduction. If you're looking for that fat, warm vintage sound, then the Summit is a good choice.

Thanks Shanky
I'm gonna have a look to Summit stuffs too
I see that you own a 828mkII
Do you know what the best way to chain it with a FW hard disk?
Which one before to get the best results with a Mac carryin' just 1 FW socket?

Re: mic and pre
Soof, if you decide on a Summit, check Ebay and see if there are any there. I got both of mine on there. (one for $1,100 and the other for $950)
As for the 828 question, unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you because I have always used the harddrive in my laptop. The only time I use an external drive is for back up or file transfer. My guess would be that you would want the 828 before the FW drive.

Re: mic and pre
Tnx, but Summit seems to not give a good result with my Gefell Mic.
I'm actually more oriented on different stuffs, such as MILLENNIA TD-1, GREAT RIVER ME-1NV , and Focusrite ISA mkII, and others such as GROOVE tubes VIPER that I hope I'll have a chance to test in the next days, 'cause I'm in a hurry to buy my Mic Pre for using in the starting production.
Tnx anyway
