I'd add Millennia HV-3D to that above list. I'm not crazy about the UAD stuff either. It's nice on certain things for that certain color. Other than that your stuck.

What are you recording..... Different pre all have different sounds.......
The Great River MV2R is pretty transparent, nice for acoustical instruments.
If you are looking for a slightly colored sound, go with a tube.....
I recently bought a Sebatron VMP-2000e, all tube pre. Sounds very nice, can be colored or moderalty transparent..... and at 1000$ for two channels its good buy.....
Get yourself the most transparent, clean, flat mic pre you can. After that if you want to color it fine. But if you get a colored pre your stuck. The first option is your best simply because of versatility.
You should seriously check out the "Precision 8" http://www.precision8.com/
It can't be beat quality price.
Henry: what do you think of MILLENNIA TD-1 Twin Direct? It seems interesting to me to be coupled with different mics
Sdemott: do you mean API 512? Didn't find a 312 anywhere
Builder: unfortunately can't find SEBATRON here (I'm in Italy), neither in Germany
Inukshuk: TRUE SYS P2 analog's got the same quality? I don't know if it's distributed in Italy: I'd really like to test it before I make up mind 'bout what to buy.
I don't need all 8 ins of the one you told me, for me a dual/stereo pre is more than enough
I agree with the above suggestions in most all cases. I would add the following: The Great RIver1NV is a 'great' choice. It's about 1k a channel and the 2 channel 1 rack space unit is a great way to go. Also the Brent Avreil stuff is the real McCoy. Both of these are essentially Neve 1272 1073 knock offs. Practically every major hit from the 70s to now has cut vocals on some form of these old neve mic pre designs. It's the sound you tend to hear most often. Everything just seems to open up on these pres. I use them for everything else as well. The other flavor of mic pre is the API which Avreil also makes a reproduced version of that's amazing. All of his stuff is reproduced down to the wire and transformers windings. Pretty serious stuff.
Mic Pres are like basic guitar sounds. You got your Strat , Tele, Les Paul guitar souns as a basic palate and most all others are some varition of those. The same is true with pres. There;s the neve-sounding camp: the API and most of the rest are basinbg their vibe on them. Sure everyone's got their little bells and whistles/features but the sound is what we came here for.

Man, I love it!! It's the best DI hands down, no questions asked. PLUS it's got their HV-3 mic pre in it too, as well as a two band EQ of their EQ model. It's like a little Origin without the compressor but with a bunch of other stuff besides. If someone wants a single channle micpre or the best DI this is yur item. Tube and/or solid state circuitry.

And also... because I see some of you using UAD-1 cards
Using for instance the MILLENNIA TD-1, or another pre without compressor, together with a UAD-1 compressor - let's say Fairchild or LA-2A, that I've got - should I get a good result recording voices?
I haven't used the VW much lately. But it is fine. I haven't upgraded it to OSX.
You won't have much success using the UAD, or any plugs for that matter, while RECORDING or tracking. It's best used for mixing. But you should get great results using you TD-1 or other very nice high end pre and then the UAD comps at mix time!
