That's including some pretty heavy duty mixing sessions taxing out my old G4, even using Powercore plug-ins via the VST-RTAS wrapper. Still, stability's not everything. I'm going to be downgrading my Pro Tools rig so that I only use it for setting up recording sessions at PT studios.
I have to agree. I've also been using PT LE & HD since v6 and I can count the number of times its ever crashed on one hand. That said, I still think it's ridiculously overpriced for what it does and I don't have any plans to ever aspire to owning my own HD rig. It's just not worth it.
Exactly, I'm (probably) not ever buying another TDM system, but if I had a commercial studio I wouldn't hesitate. That's why they cost so much. That, and the bullsh••.

It's all relative. And I think the DP7 upgrade should be about half what it is.

The point I was making is nothing changed on my system but Apples OSX 10.6. Now I can't make DP 6.02 crash. People including me have complained and wrongly blamed MOTU about DP 6.02 crashing. I stand corrected in throwing protools into the mix. Basically stand alone systems like Roland 2480s, Yamaha, Korg, Tascam, don't crash. But are limited in architecture.

Protools is a different concept since it does the lifting with external hardware. So we really are not talking the same thing. Until the latest version of PT many people used a front end like Logic or DP to run MIDI because protools MIDI capabilities were inferior...

But to sum it up you can have DP and a house, plane or a house boat... or PT...

Sorry but that's just not true, Sonar has already made an announcement of their 64bit version that will allow 32bit plugins to operate normally within the program and even giving them access to up to 128GB of ram.

I am fully aware that going 64bit requires a major write up in code and is not easy to implement but it would have been nice if they actually tried since a few already are.
I think I noticed in John Siracusa's review of SL that Apple has also done something similar with Quicktime. Everyone (DAWs, photo editing, browsers, etc) is going to have to build support for 32 bit plugins on their 64 bit hosts if they expect any sort of adoption. There is an additional advantage if they build a separate process to manage the plugins -- if the plugin causes a crash it won't bring the host down.

I'm thinkin maybe MOTU will be along with 64 bit in the spring. Any guesses as to how long from a programming perspective? They will definitely charge I would think for the labor to make it 32-64 capable. Hmmm buy 7 now, in a few months or wait till next year? short of doe right now anyway. :?:

Dp 6.02 is working much better in SL, but I've still had 7 or 8 crashes since I upgraded. Never had that many with DP before 6, but I was using a PPC Mac with Tiger or Leopard then. I'm starting to think that my 2408 has something to do with the crashes, not liking either the Intel or the OS. For instance, certain web sites crash when my computer audio is set to the PCI-424 card, but don't crash when I have it set to internal.

Actually, Mr. Clifford and Mr. Quimper both cited Pro Tools LE, where the computer does the processing, not the interface. So theirs is a fair comparison.

This was the point I was trying to get across, sorry if it sounded as if I was bashing.

I love DP and I think it's under appreciated as a DAW but I just don't see the point in this version upgrade unless your desperate for the minor improvements because inevitably in a few months DP will be releasing DP8 64bit to play catch up as other DAW developers are already focusing their efforts on 64bit. Why pay for the upgrade now when the more important upgrade will surely be coming in a couple of months.

Wow...
Do you have the latest audio driver installed for your 2408?

I was referring to PT8 LE, too (it's in my sig, but I forgot to mention it in my post).

It's a reasonable thought actually but I want to hear if the audio engine sounds different when folks report in first and see if it's solid before I buy. None of the features they have added would make much difference to me right now except the tone of the app and edit smoothing because it takes up so much of my time.

and i really, really, don't think that would be fun...

so, do you REALLY want a 64bit DP now?

OK one thing here, NI are cautious about this, for those of us with NI kit:

When the NI stuff works, it's truly awesome, but the NI stuff has always been "iffy" when it comes to DP. The DP 6.02/PPC/Leopard combo was a nightmare for a number of the NI VIs and forced me back to Tiger for a while. Ahhh, I look forward to being able to get an Intel machine some day.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but we're not talking about 64bit audio here are we? I was under the impression that the 64bit was more about memory addressing stuff, enabling loading up of more than 8gig worth of samples etc. I don't see how that would affect the 'sound' of DAW.

Thats exactly right.

64 bit operating system NOT audio.

It simply means you will be able to address up to terabytes of RAM.

The complex answer is beyond me
