Can't open DP or Audio/MIDI setup?

Everytime I open DP I get the "pinwheel" and it tells me it can not open DP because the MIDI has crashed. Then, when I try to open my Audio/MIDI setup from the utilities menu I get the pinwheel again, then it quits by itself and gives me the pop-up that asks if I want to "send a bug report to apple?"

I hope this is just something stupidly simple.

BTW, I did run Onyx software yesterday, did I perhaps change a setting in Onyx that would have screwed up my MIDI?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If I were you, I'd trash DP preference and redo the MIDI set up again.

One thing about Onyx, it'll delete a connection from any document and the application.
It happens to me everytime I use it, even I uncheck the delete connection.

When it crashes next time, and asks if you want to send a report to apple, click the "Send Report" button (at least I think that's what the button says). Then Cmd-A in the resulting screen to select all, then Cmd-C to copy. Open TextEdit or some other app and Cmd-V. Look through this and find where it says:

Thread x (crashed)

Where x is some number. Copy the contents of that thread and paste it here. We can go from there.

In the meanwhile, you could try reinstalling the latest MOTU USB driver. If that doesn't work, you might think about trashing Audio/MIDI Setup prefs (I can let you know where these are located when I get home later tonight).

OK, the AMS configurations are stored in:

~you/Library/Audio/MIDI Configurations

"~" is unix for "path to home directory" e.g. if I'm user qo, and I have a directory in my account called "foo" then, in Terminal, the following will get me there from anywhere:

cd ~qo/foo

Anyway, you might try dragging these to your Desktop and rebooting. If the problem goes away, then you can rebuild your MIDI setup from scratch. If the problem remains, we can try other things...

I'd try moving /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/iSightAudio.plugin to the Desktop and rebooting. This particular plugin has been a source of trouble with DP (crash on quit) before. I'm not sure what the relation is, but it's worth a try. If you're using iSight, this'll be a pain

No doubt you're crashing in AMS/CoreAudio. Also, when you upgraded to 10.3.9, did you use Software Update, or did you download the Combo Updater? If you used Software Update, you may want to download the Combo Updater from Apple and reinstall that. It won't hurt anything to do this. The reason I ask is:

This could be perfectly normal, but seems sort of weird to me. Installing the Combo Updater will ensure that all system components are updated.

Try uninstalling and then reinstall the MTP AV drivers. If for some reason the MTP AV is powered off or momentarily disconnected while everything is up and running, the driver (or supporting files) somehow get corrupted. Not being able to run Audio MIDI Setup and DP hanging are symptoms of this driver corruption (at least in my experience).

I'm up and running. Thanks to everyone that jumped on here and offered up their personal knowledge. I swear... everytime I come in this messageboard I learn about 10 new things.

As it turns out, I had reinstalled the usb MIDI drivers, however, I didn't uninstall before I did. When I uninstalled, reinstalled and rebooted w/my MTP AV on, all is good in the neighborhood again. Audio/MIDI setup opens without a hitch and sees my MTP AV, thenI fired up DP and vavoom, running smooth again.
