windows xp Sp2, Firewire drivers "downgraded" as per RME suggestions to be able to avoid the 100 MBit microsoft limitation on the IEEE1934 bus.

Wohoo !
There's no high pitched sounds and squeezing anymore. My Ultralite MK3 has been working perfectly with new drivers for a week.

I'm very pleased for you but it's difficult to glean anything significant from that fact without knowing which operating system you're using and what you did to solve the problem.wo1 wrote:There's no high pitched sounds and squeezing anymore. I'm using only WinXP SP3. Vista is unsuitable for stable work with audio. And never will be.comradec wrote:I'm very pleased for you but it's difficult to glean anything significant from that fact without knowing which operating system you're using and what you did to solve the problem.wo1 wrote:There's no high pitched sounds and squeezing anymore. What I've done ? Just followed these steps, as I've mentioned many times here before:
1. Turn off your system and disconnect the MOTU
2. Use Add/Remove programs to remove the MOTU driver
3. Restart your system and load the MOTU driver (make sure the MOTU is NOT connected for this process).
4. Restart the system once the MOTU driver has been loaded.
5. Shut down the system and connect the MOTU
6. Turn on the system (making sure the MOTU is currently off)
7. Once the system is back up/running, hit the power switch on the MOTU... and complete the driver install process (click Next)
And there's no problem. AT ALL.
Re: NEW (3.6.8.1360) usb/firewire drivers posted today !
Excellent. I achieved exactly the same results using XP SP3.wo1 wrote:I'm using only WinXP SP3. Vista is unsuitable for stable work with audio. And never will be. What I've done ? Just followed these steps, as I've mentioned many times here before: ... And there's no problem. AT ALL.
As for Vista. You say it's "unsuitable for stable work with audio. And never will be." Well, after making various tweaks to optimise the operating system for audio, I've found that Vista works fine for audio ... except when using MOTU products. Most of the same tweaks are required to get the best out of XP too, by the way.
I would have tolerated the Ultalite-mk3 being suitable for sophisticated multi-tracking work in XP alone if it had at least been able to play back basic audio files in Windows Media Player when I booted to my Vista installation (I have a dual-boot system). But it couldn't even do that. It couldn't even play back a 320kbps MP3 file without audio drop-outs and high-pitched squeals several times a minute. So I couldn't do non-audio work in Vista while playing music in the background. I'd have needed to connect two separate audio interfaces to allow me do that, which is very disappointing for a supposedly professional audio interface.
Like it or not, we have to face the reality that Microsoft have taken XP off the market, except for a few limited cases such as netbooks and businesses. Therefore, most people buying a PC from now until the next OS comes along will have Vista pre-installed and they won't have had much choice about that.
MOTU advertise the Ultralite-mk3 as suitable for Vista. They therefore have to accept responsibility to making it work with that operating system. If that's too much for them, MOTU should specifically warn potential purchasers beforehand that their product is unsuitable for Vista users.

I don't want to make debates about XP / Vista. If you want to use Vista - use itcomradec wrote:As for Vista. You say it's "unsuitable for stable work with audio. And never will be." And what's next ? Is it a problem for you that Microsoft discontinued XP ????!!! Is it a real problem for you in that case to make music using Windows XP ?comradec wrote:Like it or not, we have to face the reality that Microsoft have taken XP off the market, except for a few limited cases such as netbooks and businesses. Re: NEW (3.6.8.1360) usb/firewire drivers posted today !
I'm not arguing about the pro's and cons of Vista, but about MOTU releasing a product they claim works with a specific operating system when it clearly does not.wo1 wrote:And what's next ? As for the questions in your last paragraph, no, it isn't a major problem for me personally to make music using XP. But, as I explained, the Ultralite-mk3 won't even let me play back music in Vista. It isn't unreasonable to expect that I would be able to do that. Especially as MOTU promised that their product was capable of a great deal more than that.
But this isn't just about me. It's about MOTU advertising a product as capable of working with Vista when it isn't. And about them continuing to advertise that even though it is now quite apparent that the Ultralite-mk3, or at least its drivers, don't actually have that capability.

Music-making is supposed to be a pleasure, not a chore. So I took control of the problem and returned the Ultralite-mk3 to the shop.reeper wrote:this guy "comradec" is a crybaby- hes now on my ignore list

I am about to purchase a motu unit to work with my HP DV6000 running Vista Home 42bit version. I have just returned my Presonus firestudio to GC after the same degree of problems some of you are running into here. So can anyone tell me definitive whether it is possible for Motu interfaces to work with my setup or should I not even try? I suppose the other option is to go buy a Mac. Is that the best solution?
