I had a Sonnet FW card. I've taken it out. My connection issues are intermittent so it's hard to draw conclusions in a timely fashion. I'll let you know what happens.

Aramis. I'm not familiar with that utility - or what to do with it if I had it. I have an original 3GHz 8-core. ...your sig says you have an "Octo". Is that the same thing?

OCTO , yes it is ! Now , if you got the most recent Mac Pro .
That utility does not exist .

It was on the previous Mac Pro .

I think the tool was to adjust the bandwidth of the PCie slots .

I am very curious about your problems !!!

Shoot. I remembered that I need to have that FW card in there for the time being, so it's back in now until I can get around to getting another UAD-1 card to replace this piece-o-s***t LiquidMix. Man, what a headache that thing is! ...but I digress.

Thanks for your interest Aramis. I have an older 8-core, but I don't see that utility nor would I know what to do with it if I did. Are you saying the 2408 should get more bandwidth or less?

Hey Aramis,

Thanks for chiming in on this thread. I did read the article and I have to admit it's a little over my head. I don't know if I have the utility or not but I wouldn't know what to do with it if I did have it. I think Dix and I are trying to figure out by a process of elimination what is causing the communication loss between the computer and the PCIe card. Without that communication everything comes to a stand still.

The card that you have put in your computer is a pcie card .
You have 3 or 4 pcie slots in your computer
If you have the old macpro , all your cards do not works at full speed

That tool will show you if your card is installed in a 1x 2x 4x or 16 x slot .
The reason I am showing that to you is to help you determine if your mac does see your pcie card ok and at what speed it is dealing with it .
I read your steps and I do believe you have a pcie problem both of you .

Cool.

I'm using my old G5 at the moment with the older PCIx card in it, so that I can work.

I think any info I can get from the computer telling me what it knows about the PCIe card at this point would be a help. So I'll check that out when I get back to it.

Hey Scooter-- I explored the utility Aramis mentioned last year. I learned that the PCIe-424 is a 1x card, so setting it to 2x or higher will have no effect. I was hoping it would myself...

However, trying a different slot and making sure it's firmly seated is a good thing to check in any case.

Basically, if you've sent the card to MOTU once for a replacement, the ball is in MOTU's court to work with you until it's fixed. If they have reason to believe it's not the card, then they should work with you by going through every possible setting with DP, Audio MIDI, Bundles, and the PCI Console to get it to work.

One other thing to check as a litmus test would be to set up a project in Garage Band. If it works in GB, then it's a good sign that it's not the card or the driver. It's probably DP. I'd then uninstall DP entirely, reinstall the version of DP you have on disc, then install each update from there until you get to the version you want to use, like 5.13. If you are using DP6 then it's all from disc since there's only one version of DP6.

If there is a question about OSX, I would strongly recommend doing the COMBO Update of the version of OSX you are using now. Look for an OPTIONS menu in the lower middle part of the COMBO UPDATE installer. If there is not an OPTIONS button, proceed with the installation with confidence.

If there IS an OPTIONS button, click it and choose "Archive and Install"-- then proceed with confidence.

Just try switching the 2408 on.

That is the screen you get when the unit is not turned on.

That is my point . What does your computer sees about your pcie bus .
Exactly

Scooter,

I know that 424 represents PCIexpress. By why at the title part of your screen shot does it just say PCI? Perhaps you installed the pci-x version and not the express, or is that just the OS and the way it's displaying the driver sound setup window?

Switched slots for the PCIe card in the mac itself.
New 2408 mk3
New audiowire cord
Trashed prefs.
Trashed the other stuff in Frodo's list
Uninstalled the audio drivers.
Reinstalled a new one.
Unhooked the micorclock.
Unhooked the 24 i/o.

Don't know what else I can do.

I had severe driver problems at one point a few years ago, and this advice from MOTU Tech Support helped:

1. Go to System > Library > Extensions and drag MOTU PCI AUDIO to the trash.

2. Go to Applications and drag all MOTU Consoles to the Trash. Empty the trash.

3. Repair Disk Permissions, then redownload the latest PCI drivers and reinstall. Reboot the computer.

Apparently sometimes the uninstall script doesn't completely uninstall.

Good luck!

That's what they all say regardless of flavor of PCI.

Okay MOTUs theory that this issue could be a compatibility issue with my FW turns out to be incorrect. I pulled the FW card and still I'm having the same "connectivity crashes" - had one today at VERY bad time. I'm going to have MOTU send me another card I suppose.
