Work desks for mixing AND composing?

Post by Mr. Quimper »

Hi everyone. I really, really need a serious studio desk (i.e., furniture, not a console) to work with, as the lack of one is actually damaging my equipment.

Right now I'm just using a standard "computer workstation" desk, with a computer keyboard tray and space for displays and the like. I've got my Kurzweil positioned right in front of me with my computer keyboard positioned in front of that on the desk itself. It shares space with my external HDDs and interfaces.

Returning to the "damage", given the position of my Kurzweil directly in front of me, I end up leaning on it a lot as I'm typing or doing anything else unrelated to it. That has caused two of the keys to actually crack in half and I've had to tape them back together for a temporary fix. I'll likely be sending it in for a repair job, but would like to prevent this from happening again.

What I'm really looking for is desk that has a sliding keyboard shelf that can accommodate a 52pound 88key keyboard and also a place to put a mixer/control surface...hopefully a Mackie Control in the future. I'd love to be able to have my keyboard out while composing and then easily slide it away when not in use, then having my control surface right in front me for mixing. Of course, also having space for monitors, displays and some rack gear would be nice.

Most of the desks I've seen have space for a control surface and computer keyboard, but no keyboard controller, or if it does, no sliding shelf. Does this sound like something I'd have to try and build myself or is there a commercial product already available that can fulfill my needs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm...well, it looks like I did manage to find a solution. That said, for the prices they're charging, I think I may just get into "DIY" mode.

I bought a set of nylon shelf runners for $20 from a local building supplier.
Easy to install onto a board (mine is reinforced with an angular iron strip as it's made of el-cheapo wood) that should hold your Kurzweil.
Smooth, quiet operation. She's you beaut.

I think the ones I bought were rated at 40lbs. :D

I've got me one of these. Its the Studio RTA Producer Desk. I've got my monitors and computer monitor on the top shelf. 88-keyboard on the main. And there's a ton of room for rack-mounted stuff. Both of the sides are all racks and so is the center right cubby. It's super sturdy and has a wire holder on the back and everything. They sell em at guitar center so if you've got one nearby I would recommend checking it out. Its a big desk. But well worth the 400 bucks.
