OS X 10.4.x? which update release is the best?

Post by mixo »

Hi,
I'm using a PPC G5 Dual 2.7 w. 4 GB of RAM
Based on your experience, which OS X/DP combination is more stable?
OS X 10.4.x?
DP 5.x?
Considering also various 3rd part. plugins (NI Komplete, Nomad Factory, Powercore, IK, Waves, etc...)

I'm on a Mac Pro, not a PPC, but for me 10.4.11 and DP 5.13 have been flawless.
MacPro5,1 2012, six core 2 x 3.06, 10.12.5, Digital Performer 9.13, 40 gb ram, 828mkIII, 2408 mkII, MTP AV, Logic Pro X 10.3.1, Studio One v 3.2, Pro Tools 12.7.1

FWIW, Dual 2.7 as you (only 2.5GB), 10.4.11 + DP 5.01 (think the next version was primarily the Intel update, so didn't bother; waiting for 6 now) + NI Komplete (et al), no particular problems, just the usual occasional "What the heck?/why'd that happen !?".
G5 Dual 2.7 2.5gb, (10.4.11).
Yamaha mLan:01x/i88x;
DP 5.01, Cubase SX3, NI Komplete, Melodyne, Ethno, MSI, et al.

10.4.8 and DP5.11 was a killer combo, IMHO. :D

It was the best for me so far, hands down.

I'm not sure I would vote for 5.13!

quicktime playback offset definitely broken - PIA if you use the DV firewire out thing

haven't tried exporting a 4.5 file but you definitely can't export a 5.11 file in the save as

it might be a bit less prone to file corruption if you start a project in there - but maybe you going to have problems opening some older files in there...

I'm with the monkey man!

Yup, from 10.4.9 onwards Apple seems to have started adding/tweaking code in preparation for Leopard (that's the only explanation I've been able to come up with).

I realise many folks have touted the efficacy of 5.13 on 10.4.11 for some time, but I remember a number of issues arising after the 10.4.8 platteau at which many (including myself and Shooshie) at the time agreed that 10.4.8 and 5.11 was the killer combo, possibly of all time 'till that point. :D

I'm on 5.13. But I'd probably say 5.11 is the best version of DP5. It's too late for me to go back now, but if you haven't upgraded yet, I'd say go to 5.11 and wait there for DP6 (or maybe DP6.11 once they iron out the kinks).

As for OS. 10.4.11 seems pretty good. And it worked fine with 5.11 the time i did go back and use it do a project (you can have 5.11 & 5.13 installed on the same system and go back and forth no problems - except for remembering which projects go with which version).
