excessive at least my apologies for that communication. no offense intended but offensive none the less. that sucked and i apologize to ALL.
rant aside
i feel people come here for answers. people of all recording abilities. i feel like many of the "answers" given are essentially, "you cant get here from there, because the process is too detailed to be revealed, solely esoteric."
someone put alot of work into all that recording posted. to me it was real data. finally someone providing positive effort. sharing things for limited budget shut ins so to speak who dont work in a studio or music store and wouldnt get access to every product side by side compared. was it perfect? what is? was it helpful? my hand is raised. it got shot down in flames quickly by a gang of haterz lol j/k. i would more reward its content than any other in any post ive seen here yet.
people have recorded entire albums in the time we have been debating on what to plug into what.
p.s. please consider the source in my offensive first post. i was a lil discouraged about the balance of helpful encouragement to nay saying.
i have myself in check.
uh hmm someone gimme a hand down from this soapbox? cough cough
Hmmmm okay, I must say something here. I am ALWAYS for such testing---but where I think some are MISSING my point is that matter how much effort goes into testing a product, there are only certain conditions of which a true test of the quality of sound that a product can be tested. If you deviate from that, then it's not a TRUE SOURCE of how it sounds. In other words, it can be very misleading.....and this can be GOOD -or- BAD. Some mics sound absolutely awful with some pres, and vice versa...while other combinations might sound incredible when you wouldn't expect it. I am so not a fan of the AKG C414, but combine it with a nice tube pre and it can be a great mix. I already covered that.
What I'm trying to point out is that the consumer can be EASILY persuaded into something for the wrong reasons-----and again I bring up the topic of studio monitors for that. Manufacturers tell you to listen to them at the store, but that typically will give you absolutely FALSE information about the monitor. I'm just saying.....that while this stuff is NOT rocket science, when such tests are performed you must be totally scientific about it or the test itself simply then becomes a "what sounds good with this product" instead of "what the pre actually sounds like".
Off my soapbox.....
Thank you,

To me this is all fine. Every MOTU-NATION member has the right to debate here regardless of opinion. If it were not so it would likely be Germany 1942.
So anyway.... I posted this because it was useful to me regardless of methods used and therefor I thought maybe someone else. Enough said.
We did one of the first shoot offs once when I worked for a studio in 1969 for mics. I was 18. From that came the highly touted SM57, Sennheiser 405 and a few other cool mics like KM 84s, Sony C series etc.
We didn't publish it, no internet, but several engineers from studios in Hollywood and musicians came to add their views which included Engineers Donn Landee, David Holeman (Wally Heiders), I forget his name but the engineer that did Paul Revere and the Raiders from CBS, (Nice guy), and Doug Botinick then working at Sunset Sound on Randy Newmans 12 songs album. When done, we all agreed of the usefulness and cost or bang for the buck and went out and bought more of these mics for our respective studios. I bought a pair of Sony C-37A's. Wish I still had them.
Never did another one but a few others in the industry have on mics and I must say, they were all helpful to me, in fact, there is a website that has recorded previews of all the classics now but I forgot the address.

You, my friend, have made my day.
Wholeheartedly accepted. Well done Jeff!
