London is 2 hours away by train - I'm living in Paris.
Early in 1986 I got a MacPlus and MOTU's Performer V1.22 along with Professional Composer. That first version of Performer had no tempo change, but hung in there hoping they'd add it one day!
High excitement in 1988 to get a first external HD (20Mb).
DP10.13, OSX 10.13.6, Melodyne Studio 4.1, Dorico Pro 3.5, Sibelius 7.1.3, MOTU Mosaic 1.5, MOTU Traveler mk1.
i'm originally from the UK - but live in Hong Kong now.. does that count? My first encounters with DP were with 2.71? ( i think? can't remember what colour book that one was DP 3 was white - then the red came big blue - and of course the lovely red today - what colour you reckon dp6 gonna be?
when I started out it was with cubase on the 1040ste - drooling over the atari falcon with it's built in audio card! wow 4 track!
at uni - I trained on the audio file from AMS - it had a green screen!!!! no wave forms except when doing crappy offline edits - in the other room we had razor blades!!!

How many people here mention DP and get a reply along the lines of 'D....what?'
This makes us waaayyy cooler than anyone else of course.
Oh yeah,
+1
...... La - zy sunday afternoon- ah!
Hee hee, yeah I get that all the time. Usually from Nuendo users who've never seen a mac before
I agree that alot of Cubase users seemed to start out with cracked versions and then sort of grew up with it. Quite a loss leader for Steinberg!
I was introduced to the then 'Performer' on a Quadra 650 with Sample Cell ( remember that?) back in 1993 while working out in Hong Kong. It was my second ever 'proper' job, having just finished a stint working as assistant and general dog's body to an established Ozzie composer who worked exclusively on Fairlights! He had what for those days was a remarkably massive sample library of over 500 MB!
Heady days

how bizazzare - I'm still in Hong kong and - I still have 2 fairlights! ( mfx series - they actually have the CMI still built in - well if you boot up in that mode! )
brilliant machines!
where abouts in derby? I used to be in heanor / ilkeston area at one point - must be some druid leylines there or summat
I started with a legitimate copy of Cubase VST in 1997ish. I did a cross grade to DP3 when Cubase started regularly crashing about a year or two later. I've been happily using DP exclusively since then, but only had the resolve to sell my Cubase dongle a few months ago.
The reason I started with Cubase was that I had been using a free, cut-down version prior to buying a fuller version. I know you get free Audiodesk when you buy a MOTU interface, but, on the whole, the marketing in the UK for DP is quite low key when compared with Steinberg, Propellerheads and Emagic/Apple to name but 3.

Not quite... I've been using DP since 1999 and macs since they came out. I also have used protools and am now trying to get my head around logic... but DP is my favourite.
27" iMac, MOTU 828mk2, 10.6, DP7, Melodyne etc, etc.

Wow quite a coincidence then. My company, Eurocom is in Mackworth on the way to Ashbourne.
Where are you living in HK? I had 4 happy years there, 3 of which were spent on Lamma Island. Used to work in a studio called The Media Bank in Kodak House, Quarry Bay. It was a Swain Brothers/Anders Nelson collaboration. Before that I worked for Noel Quinlan.
Any of these names familiar to you?

One of the nicest guys I ever met, it was a genuine privilege to have known him. He was not only an outstanding studio engineer/owner, he was also a highly qualified helicopter pilot. Sadly, he was killed when his helicopter went out of control and crashed on the way back to Dublin from the West of Ireland.
Every time I launch DP I think of him with affection and gratitude.
In strictly geographical terms, it's true that Belfast is situated on the island of Ireland, Simsy. But the sad realities of political geography dictate that it's actually in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So you're in with UK lads by the looks of it.
Whereas I'm stuck on me own down here in the banana Republic (also known as Sure-it'll-do-land).
But since music knows no borders or boundaries, let's declare ourselves citizens of the brand new supranational state of Deepeeland.
Kind regards.

I'm currently in Manchester, although do most of my work in London. I am a returning DP after leaving for a short while during the 3 to 5 transition period. I have been using Samplitude (yes went PC!) and then Logic, but feel most at home with DP and am glad to be back!
Anyone in the NW fancy a beer then give us a shout!

Yes I know Joel Swaine, I worked with him in the early days at Media Bank (infact it was through meeting him that I was offered the job) but he went AWOL for a while and I lost touch with him.
Who/What is 'Turner'? Is Schtung/Schtuum Music (whatever it was called) still there ?
I also lived in Sheung Wan for a bit, in the tiniest flat known to mankind!
Cheers,
Jim
