Can't anyone here tell me what side chain means
as in side chain compressor?

Sidechain refers to using one signal to trigger processing on another one. A common example would be busing the kick drum signal to the key input of a compressor on a bass guitar track. That way, the bass guitar volume is lowered by the compressor whenever there is a hit on the kick drum. Another common one is setting up a de-esser by busing a copy of the vocal signal through an EQ to cut all frequencies except the sibilance, then sending that EQ'ed signal to the key input of a dynamic processor on the vocal track.

It goes to show I have a lot more to learn about engineering.

I rarely use sends because I found it complicated years ago
and never bothered with it as a result. I'm sure it's much easier than I think it is but I developed a psychological block to approaching it.

I uusually only use inserts for each individual track.
It piles up the CPU with plugins like Altiverb and Guitar Rig.

I'm a lazy bastard with engineering but I'm going to have to get off my butt and start figuring some of these things out.

In the meantime, I just get the best sound I can on a track and bounce it to clear out the plugins but keep the original in case it doesn't sit right in the track.

After mixing I throw on the Waves L13 multi maximiser (or whatever it's called) and pump it up with "enhance 2" and it kicks the whole mix up to
'hype level.'

I have editting down pretty well but I realy need to learn that time adjustment thingy again where you can adjust the tempo of an audio track(s) like 8 drum tracks to fit in with the song or vise versa.

I usually use strip silence for kicks and snares and quantize them with some adjustments to the length of the separated soundbites and then use fades to get rid of the digital clicks.

BTW
How do I get rid of those annoying pop up windows when the cursor goes over the pan, volume etc. knobs?

I know it's a pan knob when I'm usiing it but the pop ups block my vision of the actual knob when I'm trying to adjust it.

PS OT: I almost installed Leopard on my main hard drive but after reading about it here decided to wait because I love my plugins and DP5 is running pretty damned smoothly at the moment. I'll buy another external drive to put it on soon and try it out.

There are two things here that can easily be mistaken

- Side chain filter
- External side chain

Side chain filter, is when there is more or a less an EQ, often a selection of pre-defined curves, that is used "in behind" on the current material fed to the plug-in and used to provide frequency-selective compression.

External side chain, is when you have the possibility to feed another audio stream to the compressor, and with that stream, affect the compression pretty much as with the side chain filter.

What does the term "in behind" mean?

Providing frequency-selective compression sounds like a cool way to approach the sound one might want.

Can you expound on the subeject.
It all sounds extremely interesting to me.

Please forgive my layman's requirments in simple language to get my head around some of these very usefull ideas.

Voxengo is in the process of porting their sizable collection of plugins to OSX. They posted a beta of their Overtone EQ, which is a free plugin. So far it's working in all my apps. Interesting things can be done with it.

The Overtone Eq is working on my intel mac! I installed it last week and tested it and all was fine as far as i could tell....
