There's the thing, monitors have gotten larger, flatter, and higher res; and the overview makes me feel like I'm back in OS8--except that I'm no longer eyeball to eyeball with a 17" CRT that was so big of buttock that the screen was nearly even with the front of the desk. :D

I dunno, I realize I am a DP novice. I do like the app, but a have nightmares if I want to play around with my arrangement, drag MIDI files around, rex files etc,..it takes me forever,..

btw, I use 2 X 19" monitors.

Thanks

Ah, you see, Peter? You and your Tracks Overview Window simply have not met and made friends. You're having TOW-anxiety. You've got to balance your TOW chakras. :D:D

A little practice might help. Make a copy of your project, and then just go nuts. Copy things. Merge them. Drag them. Option-Drag them. Learn the keyboard commands. (I linked you to the tips sheet above, remember?) Zoom in and zoom out, and get used to what it does.

There's one thing that distinguishes DP from other DAWs in this regard: you're responsible for your endpoints. When I work with a file for a week or so, I get very familiar with measure numbers and markers, and it's pretty quick and easy for me to type in those endpoints for selection ranges. I don't always type them in, but when I want specific and exact subdivisions, I'll often type them in. That becomes almost a reflex after a while.

I don't want to drive this into the ground, so I'l stop here and give you a chance to look at it on your own. I hope the result is far better sleep!

The TO is great for macro editing, and together with the editing windows you can get what you need done. But I noticed something new and intriguing with Sonar 7 after checking out that other thread on this forum. There's some new feature called MIDI Magnifier, which allows you to zoom a section of MIDI in place without opening another editing window. This could be a really cool addition to the TO that would give seasoned users another fine method for editing while placating some of the newcomers who are used to working in one "arrange" window.

I probably already posted this, but the secret to the Track Overview window with 2 monitors is to set one monitor to a lower resolution, which will mean the track window will appear larger on that monitor.
Another thing to consider - if you have a lot of tracks, the Track Overview window lets you see them all (or at least most of them) without constantly having to scroll the window up or down.

That really depends on how many tracks you have to work with, which varies greatly from one user to the next.

Ok, time for the big question...what with my having Komplete 4+Massive, and probably upgrading to 5, and then adding Logic as well, am I going to suffer from complete VI overload??? It seems like Logic's got an equivalent to nearly everything NI has (minus Reaktor) - does any sane person need all that?

If Logic's VIs are really that good, I may decide to sell my NI stuff...

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. By that, I mean check out the VIs in L8 first. Unless you are completely sure that your are totally done with DP or any other DAW, keep your third-pary VIs.

What Frodo said --

I can't compare the organs because I don't have the NI one but to me the NI synths have more complexity than the Logic synths. Kontakt has a lot going for it over the logic sampler too.

I wouldn't be selling any NI stuff massive is just that, massive  and while i havn't heard L 8 synths yet my wife has L 7 and massive and the MX4 eat them in my opinion.

Definitely keep what you have...moah is bettah!

Actually, I seem to be in the minority here, I didn't find DP's VI's to be that bad either.

Hey! Have you been talking to my wife? :?

DOH!!! You mean the TO Window, don't you?
LOL!
Shooshie wrote:Well, first off, how bigz your monitor? If you've got a 30" monitor, then yes, I'll bet it DOES appear small.
I heard somewhere DP used to be optimised for 17" monitors.
Perhaps it was in a MOTU blurb...
Now would seem to be the time to make ammends.
Shooshie wrote:... for example, you have a bridge, and you want to drag a copy to its proper location at the end of the next verse, you just zoom out to see the entire arrangement, select all, type in the bar numbers (or click on a marker then shift-click the next marker), and you can option-drag it to the proper position...
I think you only need click the first marker, Shoosh; DP should select everything between it and the next marker in the sequence.
If memory serves, that is. :D

That depends on your style of music. I am working with a fellow who uses logic instruments (I know his understanding of logic is well above par, so no issue there)
While the ease and stability of his system is noteworthy. Compared to the 3rd party vi's that I enjoy (albino 3, virus powercore) I am not at all impressed with the overall sound (not including adding additional host plug ins and efx).
We try to dial him in as much as possible (sound sculpt), but at the end of the day, I always take a MIDI feed and just run my personal 3rd party vi's in dp or live......

May I mention we are more into the electronica/abstract/experimental seeking sounds than conventional (clavs, rhodes, b3, organ, piano) if that is any factor.
Macbook pro, 3 gigs of ram, osx 10.62, Dp 5.13, Live 8.1.2, Reason 4, Tc powercore Virus, Albino 3.02, proper ergonomic sitting posture, plenty of coffee (french press only with a pinch of cardamon added)
My dp inspired music.....

i'll buy that. i prefer my 3rd party stuff to just about anything in logic's bundle. they're good for starters, though, and as low-cpu sketch instruments. i mostly use them as supplements (mostly es2 and sculpture).
