older equipment (samplecell II / OS 9.2 / DP3)

Post by rex »

I'm using dp3.0 on a g4 os9.2.2 and I can't get my samplecell II to work. I've tried everything I think? I have to use softsamplecell in it's place and we all know how terrible it is to have everything come out on 1 stereo bus.

Does anyone remember how to do this...? Please?

This is older stuff I know but all I can afford right now.

I don't remember but I have google.

••• Installation and MIDI notes

SampleCell Editor 2.1.1 requires OMS® for MIDI services. Please use the enclosed OMS install disks to install OMS 2.1 in your system before running the SampleCell Editor.

The Digitest diagnostic test for SampleCell requires a cold start after use. After running Digitest to check your SampleCell cards, you must shut down your system (and expansion chassis) and then restart both before trying to run SampleCell.

Digital Performer users must use the OMS emulator included with FreeMidi in order to communicate with SampleCell. You should not load the FreeMidi OMS emulator and OMS at the same time, the two programs conflict with one another.

When running FreeMIDI with the OMS Emulator, you MUST first configure FreeMIDI by creating a FreeMIDI setup before launching SampleCell or Pro Tools, otherwise you will crash.

Digital Performer/FreeMidi/OMS emulator users will not be able to hear sequences in the background.

If I do remembef correctly there is discussion of MIDI set up DP in the docs in these various versions. I do not remember which editor I used last but seems like one of the later ones would be the one to get

Personally I still think samplecell II is still pretty cool -- I have one in an old G3 that I sometimes fire up and use as a standalone sampler, linked via MIDI to my OS X computer running DP. But I am kinda strange I guess, in that I like old computers & old samplers

I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone! I also have a SampleCell-only OS9 machine.

If I have 10 samples on my hard disk from which I want to map a drum kit, I work fastest and find myself most comfortable with SampleCell Editor. I guess it just "clicks" with what I expect of a sampler UI.

I've been seriously debating getting a used Pro Tools Mix system just for my hardware SampleCells. Call me weird...

I still have SampleCell card in my g4, but haven't used it in over a year. Boy do I miss it. I'm not clear exactly what you want to do, or what you're having problems with, but I know SamplceCell required an INIT and extension (OS 9 terminology) to work properly. After that, as far as I can remember, it worked fine. I will say that I only used SampleCell with Studio Vision (when I went to OS X I switched to DP, and boy do I miss SV sometimes too) so perhaps I'm not the best to ask about using SC with DP 3, which I never used.

can you help me? i want to replicate that setup but can't work it out. i'm trying to work out how to connect my DP/Macbook/OSX rig to trigger my old SC2 card in my old G4/400. i have a motu fastlane interfacing all my hardware synths to the macbook....but how do i get OSX MIDI to recognise the G4? Add another fastlane and hook that up to usb in the G4?

rex can u be more specific with the problem? is it audio or a MIDI issue?

My set up: both machines have a MIDI interface.

OS X machine --> MIDI interface out ---MIDI CABLE---> MIDI interface in ----- > SampleCell machine.

Then in audio/MIDI setup on the OS X machine you create a SampleCell II device. (just like any other external MIDI module) Here is a picture from my Audio/MIDI set up (this picture is for my Gigastudio PC, but it is just the same kind of thing for my SampleCell Mac.

How it looks in DP:

My specific Samplecell II problem

Post by rex »

First of all I'm glad I'm not the only one still wanting to use this sampler.

Secondly, Thank you all for your responses.

And Finally.. or (thirdly) a word even I don't use......

I have: A. all the init's and extensions avaliable from Digidesign.
B. OMS and OMS emulator

Trying to get this to work has taken place as a personal marathon/Quest lasting many hours at a time.

The closest I've gotten was having the card being recognised by the system. But always crashing the computer upon trying to load into ram or trying to audition a sound byte. The Editor has passed all of the tests but still will crash the system when attempting loading or auditioning.

I can't currently remember the dae/dsi combo that got me that far as I was so depressed I couldn't get it to work.. (I always get stuff to work)

I prefer to stay with stuff I know well and had just upgraded to this setup from a newbus system. Thats right DP 2.6 / digi882 / miditimepiece / samplecell newbus set-up. The computer motherboard finally gave out. :-) I guess I got my moneys worth. still have the the newbus digi 882 / and samplecell cards complete, if anyone is interested.

So to recap Its a
G4 OS 9.2.2 •••
DP 3.11
motu audio •••
motu 828mkII •••
OMS ••• (I have the oms emulator and free MIDI .. prefer freemidi)
MIDI timepiece - stealth serial port •••
currently can't use SampleCell II so I'm using soft samplecell

I could almost live with it but OMS doesn't recognize my triton as a triton so no patch lists or patch changes for triton in DP.

Thanks again everyone.. Rex

P.S.
I recorded my latest song with this new setup and DP2.6
