Hi, emulatorloo!
I'll try that next. As for the article link you gave, I appreciate it! The only thing is: I don't get an alert message at all. Nothing.
But, like I said, I'll try the CD thing. Although, I'm not real confident at this point since I can't even boot from CD as it is. But I'll give it a go.
Another question: Is there some sort of preference file, either in OSX or OS9, that may have been corrupted and won't let me boot into OS9 or CD? Just a thought.
My last desperate thought is to "downgrade" to an earlier OSX and see if THAT works. Could Tiger itself be the culprit? Any thoughts on this? Anything I need to be aware of if I decide to do this? Is it even possible?
Thanks, again Loo! I appreciate the ideas. :D

Oh I do not think you need to downgrade. . .

I found this thread @ MacMinute

http://www.macminute.com/cgi-bin/wwwthr ... &o=0&part=

G4 Will Not Boot From CD

acornflyer (when asked did you find a fix)

Yeah I did. First disconnect any peripheral devices - including all USB devices (obviously, leave the keyboard & mouse plugged in, but that's all).

Then open up the case and if you have a slave HD, disconnect that - to do this, just remove the ribbon cable, there's no need to disconnect the drive's power.

Then disconnect the main HD - to do this, again just remove the ribbon cable, there's no need to disconnect the drive's power.

Then startup the machine from an OS9 CD [ed note: hold down "C" key on startup]. If it boots OK (as mine did), reconnect the main HD and try it again. My G4 was OK from here on in, so if this doesn't work for you, I don't think I can help.

Good luck!
the original poster never got around to doing this, as he solves his problem by leaving the battery out for 30 hours -- he says that he took it out for an hour and that did nothing. But somehow 30 hours did the trick.

There is also much talk on the thread that you need to use the OS 9 disk that came w the machine.

Anyway -- worth reading thru the thread if you get a chance.

A little news on the Sonnet front...

Post by taggart »

Here's a bit of an update to my Sonnet Duet/OS9 problem. I wrote to Neal from Sonnet and asked if there was any progress. The reason I wrote to him was because I saw Sonnet is getting ready to release Duets for both the Mirror Door and the Xserve. He wrote back and basically said the moment the MDD and Xserve Duets are shipping, they'll post the OSX firmware upgrade. I know you were all tossing and turning at night waiting to see what happened next! :D
Another thing, Neal at Sonnet has been great at letting me know what's going on and taking the time to email me back very quickly. I'll definitely be buying more of their products as the need arises. (I told him so, too)
Take care, all!

Thanks for the update. you mentioned new upgrades for the MDD's and I immediately went to their website. If I understand this correctly, that would mean (finally) an upgrade for my 1gHz FW800 G4 (which I think is included in the MDD classification).

There's no way I can get a MacPro any time soon, and I've been looking at having to make this machine last even longer. This puts a bit of hope in my computer world.

Thanks again, and good luck!

have you tried inserting one of your bootable OS 9.x CDs , waiting till it mounts and then re-starting with command-option-shift-delete keys all held down till the first signs of a sytem found (or not) show up? Maybe it works.

And I know my machine is a bit long in the tooth and I really should spring for a new one...yadda, yadda, yadda. Someday. :(
Then Sonnet I have in my G4 now has worked flawlessly and I expect nothing less from the new processor. Yep, from here on in it looks like SMOOOOOOTH sailing!
I used that processor in my G4 Quicksilver for years w/o a problem in OS 9 - Tiger. Never did a firmware upgrade or anything else. Didn;t even use their driver after a while! It just ran. I assume it is seated correctly? I don;t have the patience to read the whole thread (now at 4 pages).

Ok, let's see. I'll try to reply to everybody. :D
coolcolin...That's one of the problems. I can't boot from ANYTHING other than OSX inside the computer. I CAN boot into classic mode but that doesn't help with the firmware upgrade, according to Sonnet. But on the bright side, it must mean that my OS9 is working for SOMETHING! I just can't get my machine to boot directly from my OS9 folder.
Hi, MLC! My current Sonnet 1.4 Single processor has worked great lo these many years. The other night I actually took out the Sonnet 1.4 and installed the Duet WITHOUT the firmware upgrade, just to see what would happen. Nothing. I re-started and nothing. Blank screen. No drive noise (the good kind that tells you it's working). Nothing. So, back in went the Sonnet 1.4 Single processor and I'm back where I was. I still works great, but I want the DUET!!! :x :D GRRR...
emulatorloo! Do I detect some sarcasm? Hmmm? LOL! Just kidding!
:D I appreciate the replies and good thoughts!
Well, like I said before...Sonnet has been very good for/to me. Just my personal experience and I will buy from them again. My 1.4GHz from them has worked from the get-go, and I don't expect the Duet to be any different, once I get it working, of course!
I'm not sure how all this software/firmware stuff works, but my only gripe is they should have had a firmware upgrade that works with OSX from the start, instead of having to boot into OS9.
One last thing...I should never have made that stupid "Smooth Sailing" comment in the first place.

I'm just having a little fun with ya, emulatorloo! I appreciate the support! Keep sending me those positive vibes. I keep checking the Sonnet site and it still says "shipping soon" for the Mirror Door and Xserve upgrades. I'm optimistic, though.
And yes, you're right! I WOULD make good use of it! :D
It will be nice to have a decent processor to occupy my time now that winter's setting in.
Thanks, again everybody. Sigh! I'll keep y'all posted as usual.

Taggert, it sounds as if you have installed the new encore before running the software CD firmware upgrade.
You must install the firmware BEFORE installing the encore.
Try puting your old processor back in, boot os9 & intstall the software cd.
BTW what rev AGP Mac do you have? Rev 3 does not support the duo.

The 1-day battery removal trick worked for me when my Beige refused to start from anything but my OSX partition (CD-ROM included). I know we're talking about a different model, but it's interesting to see that there was a common problem/cure.

Right now I'm debating a Sonnet for my Quicksilver 1G dual.

Dual 1gig is a nice machine --

This site might help you do comparisons w the upgrades that are out there. You can compare the performance of your machine to the upgrades that are available for it:

http://eshop.macsales.com/benchmark/agp.cfm

(I got a dual upgrade for my QS a couple of years ago. I think nowadays, if I had some PCI cards I still needed, I would look hard at a used Dual g5 1.8 or 2.0 w PCI-X slots -- JMHO. If I didn't have any PCI cards, I would look hard at an intel core 2 duo imac -- those look like they give g5 class performance)
