Re: Report on audio causing Mac Pro problems
Wow. Interesting response. I think I'll just follow this issue elsewhere. What's is supposed to do... get cooler, use less amps under a load?

Re: Report on audio causing Mac Pro problems
The heat is NORMAL!!! Check this out: Is the utility shown in your post monitoring heat and voltage or just processor load? I can't tell. Ars Technica says: Confounding the issue even more is the fact that using audio doesn't seem to show any corresponding increase in processor load, just increases...

Report on audio causing Mac Pro problems
Here's the Ars Technica headline: Nehalem Mac Pros take 20% performance hit when playing audio and the link to the article: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/02/nehalem-mac-pros-take-20-performance-hit-when-playing-audio.ars" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Anyone notice...

Re: Apple explains benefits of 64 bit mode
If you get a chance to dig in, I'd be interested to know if you found that the performance improvement is mostly in the host or the plugins. It may be some of both, but is it weighted toward one or the other? The memory server mentioned above is interesting because it does seem to remove the 64 bit ...

Re: Apple explains benefits of 64 bit mode
Yeah, there's lots of confusion on the sound quality. This was on AppleInsiders story about the Logic upgrade: The company noted that there is no difference in sound quality between running the applications in 32-bit or 64-bit modes. Prior versions of the software used 64-bit processing resolutions ...

Re: Apple explains benefits of 64 bit mode
Agreed, you can overload any single machine. You can create such a heavy workload that even a distributed system fails because you have so many machines that you spend all your time patching and troubleshooting them. That's a different type of limited scalability. We each have to pick our poision, I...

Re: Apple explains benefits of 64 bit mode
People often complain that Logic 9 is a memory hog, so instead of optimizing the 32 bit version Apple preferred to release a 64 bit one. This is of course a big benefit for Apple to silence those complaints. They are saying that 64 bit does little very little for Logic itself, or any DAW for that m...

Apple explains benefits of 64 bit mode
Logic has been updated to 64-bit, but the interesting note I found is this document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3989 in which Apple briefly explains the benefits of 64 bit DAW apps: What advantages are there to using 64-bit mode? The main advantage is that you can address vast amounts of memory. W...

Re: Grand Central Dispatch and Open CL Performance Possibilities
That's the kind of news I've been hoping for. I've held back on hardware and software purchases since I first heard of the nehalem architecture changes. I was going to pull the trigger when SL came out, but now that I see what it's costing for software updates, I think I'll wait a bit more in case t...

Re: DP 7 Officially Announced!!!!
No one mentioned the work done to support multi-threading and multi-processor operation improvements offered in SL. That work may be worth at least some of the upgrade cost for most people. Grand Central Dispatch seems to be considered a major component of SL, and it's good to see MOTU taking advant...

Re: New Mac Pros.......
I'm gonna guess that #2 would be faster given the updated processor. But you'd want to see benchmarks to be sure. Did I mention - I'm damn envious! What a problem to have... :) Good luck. Either system will be amazing! In addition to waiting for benchmarks on the new Mac Pro hardware itself, it may...

Re: New Macs Are Out
The new quad core Mac Pro has a limit of 8 GB of ram. Yipes... that sounds worrisome. Is there a plausible technical reason for this or is it possible that these machines were somehow "hobbled" to drive more buyers to purchase the more expensive model? Note the heavy use of the word appar...

Check out the post on the DP section of the board, it's confirmed that DP, being multi-threaded, will use all 8 cores, in fact it will use all the cores it can find! So there will be some very speed increases, for those that need it Thanks for directing me to that info on DP. Now of course, I'll ha...
