Yes I use the 4 pin fire wire port. With an simple •‚¬ 10,- ($ 8,-) 6 to 4 pin cable. Works great! I once used the PCMCIA slot with for wireless internet but it crashed every 5 minutes. It's a very usefull setup.

The most used setup would be
828 as main unit and the 8 pre as ADAT converter.

keep in mind to use two ADAT cables, cause the 8pre sync on the in-port.

You can't use a normal RCA cable.

when dasiychaining you'll keep the outputs (main/headphone). At least i think those don't work in this setup. On the 8pre #2 that is.

I think the #1 #2 8pre only tells your computer which is which. So #1 doesn't have to be the most important one.
And if it works when #2 clocks, then let it clock

I can say for sure you won't loose any inputs, but I can't say for sure if you'll keep the main out and the headphone out.

had this problem a while ago.

try for starters to delete/uninstall the drivers etc
and then reinstall them

other then that (been there, done that got the T-shirt) it's XP causing the trouble. You'll forced to reinstall XP.

sounds like the fan is jammed slightly.

here you can choose the output for windows default sound
probebly there's an internal soundblastertype card and there's the motu.
