Unless Jamey has the drums in mono you can't do a whole lot. For jazz you only need to hear a ride or hihat anyway!

DP vs Logic Xpress

Got Logic express on an educational discount (about 2/3rds off the price). The audio editing is rather poor, the plugins are dreadful, and the MIDI setup is strange. And there is no user forum like this. However, on my poor old powerbook G4 800 I can now run reason in rewire mode (after a bit of mes...

you need to go into audio MIDI setup in Osx and create a new device for the yamaha motif. This needs to be routed to your interface. Have you tried this?

If you are recording say one or two tracks at a time, you will get on just fine. It's surprising how much you can get on the OS drive without hassle . The most i've seen is 18 tracks onto a 17" powerbook (an accident, was meant for a lacie but went the wrong way). Having a fast external drive s...

I've spoken to 3 or 4 different dealers who all say they don't supply lacie's any more because they've gone downhill, because of the sheer volume of drives they're having to supply. whether that's true or not i don't know, but i definitely am steering clear of them from now on! sure other people ha...

I use a Lacie d2 which I've been pretty happy with, good price point and seems to be reliable. I think hard drives need to get some regular use or they become unreliable..

I think Logic is capable of this, it's called aggregate instruments or something, but DP doesn't do it. The new version on the way might though..

Lacie D2 triple interface drives are great, I have one. Very portable, and you have a rackmounting option too. For desktop use i leave it sitting on top of one of the styrofoam packing ends to damp the negligible noise from the motor: this works really well. Highly recommended, couldn't be happier!

New Mac battery for mobile recording

I notice the new macs use lithium polymer (as opposed to lithium ion) batteries. Having owned a few high end mobile phones with lithium polymer batteries (with excellent battery life) i wonder what effect that will have on a laptop battery life. I see an improvement on the cards for mobile recording...

Yes, the charger in the Aluminum PB G4's is smart enough to not charge the battery unless it needs it. That said, it is recommended by Apple that to get the best life out of a battery, you should cycle it at least once a month. So, it's probably a good idea to run not plugged in every now and then ...

avoid clavia Ddrum triggers, the kick drum is hopeless and double triggers all the time. If you are a metal artist this may suit you!! Yamaha do a great module to convert a mic signal into triggers, works perfectly every time. Will get back to you with the model, i'm not a drummer (but i know loads)

One thing I will say is that for whatever reason my Gina 24 sounds much better in this machine than it did on a PC. Greater dynamics and wider soundstage. Any Idea why ? Better power supply most likely. Although Macs are more expensive, the parts quality is much better than a run of the mill PC. Any...
