just on the subject of back-up...

i usde to back-up to dvd, and i still do occassionally, but i've now got a back-up firewire drive attached to each firewire drive, and a second internal drive mirroring the main internal drive, and use a fantastic little app called chronosync to back-up each morning. set it once, and it just copies over anything that's been added since. similarly, i don't get the back-up drives to delete anything, it moves it all to a file called "archive", which i can check, and then delete it manually if i don't need it anymore.

i know i'm sounding like a total anorak, but it's such a fantastic set-up now, and i can sleep easy at night. (when work permits!) :D

I'd just like to add, don't forget about rsync which is built into OSX and Xrsync which you can download, this is what I use to backup all my work every morning at 4am (I figure that might be the only time I won't be working on it, should move it to 7am really :) )

In addition, I think CarbonCopyCloner has some cool features as well.

I've spoken to 3 or 4 different dealers who all say they don't supply lacie's any more because they've gone downhill, because of the sheer volume of drives they're having to supply. whether that's true or not i don't know, but i definitely am steering clear of them from now on! sure other people have similar experiences with other manufacturers, though. probably bad karma coming round to me for something :)
I approached a local pro audio dealer for a hard drive, mentioned lacie and he was like "no no i've sent so many back" and tried to sell me some thing called a v2, which looked like a bit like a carrilon. He was quite happy to sell my friend 2 lacies about 6 months before that, so I just went with the lacie, cause I thought the guy might have been telling fibs.
The Lacie has been fine.
Does anyone leave their drives near monitor speakers? That may well cause them to fail ya know!

I've yet to own a LaCie drive that has NOT had catastrophic failure in the 2-3 year time frame. I figure they just aren't robust enough for the constant read/write of qudio recording.

To me, it was worth a little bit of extra cash to buy the Glyph drive, which has proven 100% reliable, better performance, and quieter as well. I did a lot of on-line shopping to find the best deal, and found a site that sells them for 2/3 of what Sweetwater and the others charge, so it was only slightly more expensive than a LaCie drive.

OK mhschmieder! .....how's about telling us where you found the Glyphs at a steal!
I have one Glyph and about 8 lacie D2s in various sizes. Only one Lacie has gone down so far (touch wood)

Prices better than Sweetwater would be good !

Let us know.

Thanks
