Clock PT w/MTPAV for Pull Up/Down????

Post by studiostuff »

I will be receiving some video/audio material from a client for which I am to provide an underscore.

They are using the Digidesign Sync I/O to clock their PT system which will be the source of the material they send to me for my work.

They tell me I will need to be able to do pull up or down of frame rate to sync with the material they are providing when I create and record my work.

I have a Motu MIDI TimePiece A/V which apparently has the ability to output a word clock and output a pull up and pull down rate.

(1) Can I use the MTPAV insted of using a Digidesign Sync I/O to clock Pro Tools and achieve the same synch results (accurate sync throughout a reasonably lengthy video element) ?

(2) Is the word clock output from the MTPAV similar in quality to the Digidesign Sunc I/O clock output... and will using the MTPAV clock cause music I am recording and sending to this client to sound inferior to music I would send if I had used the Sync I/O?

Please forgive me if this is a newbie sort of question. I am new to the pull up/pull down and word clock quality issues.

Thanks in advance for as much info as you can provide!!

I have scored a bunch(over 90 shows for A&E, History Channel, Discovery, etc.) using DP and having the music and audio go to many types of post edit software with no problems. The key is to make sure you are running whatever native frame rate and sample rate they are using. Example, most of the post houses were using 48K 24 or 16 bit, 29.97 drop frame. Make sure they send you either a QT time file WITH linear TIME CODE and window or video with a time code stripe that matches what they are editing too. As long as you pull your hit points from the time window on the video, and it is lined up and running clean with DP you should be good to go through the whole project. I just did a 3 hour movie running slave to a VHS with time code stripe and it worked perfectly.

Best of luck!!

Ron

Hopefully they can tell you

Thanks for your reply Ron!

My questions have more to do with the quality of the word clock in the MTPAV and if/how that will effect the sound of my music.

Any additional input on that question...?

Thanks,

SS

I have used the MTP Word clock occasionally. I am using it to sync my DM3200 right now. Do you have the MTP firmware update? I have never had any issues with it. My guess would be that unless we start talking about an Apogee word clock, I would think that the MOTU- & Digidesign clocks would be on par with each other.

Just my $0.02

I don't recall getting or updating the firmware on the MTPAV...

I guess the best thing will be to just try the MTPAV first. If _I_ can hear a degraded difference in the sound between the internally clocked Digi 192 and the externally provided clock from the MTPAV... I can always pop for the Sync I/O.

As much as I hate to say it... $2000 bucks is not the end of the world if the tunes sound better.

Thanks again for your reply!!
