Should We Start a UVI Tips and Issues Thread
In the DP forum there are a number of good permanent topic threads, but here in MachFive there are none. One of the major features of Machfive is the ability to read virtually any sample format. And without content, Machfive is useless, so converting libraries is an important element of working with the sampler. But it seems there are often questions about what works, what doesn't, workarounds, etc. So I was thinking maybe we should start a sticky thread on this topic.
Here are some starting points that could be interesting:
* Can Garageband and Jampack EXS instruments be converted to Machfive? If so, how?
* Which formats tend to convert over without problems?
* Which formats tend to have problems? Are there workarounds?
* Keymapping and other topics...
What do you guys think? Is there enough critical mass for this kind of topic?

Hi billf
I think this is a great idea!
I can't reliably convert batches of EXS samples and I had a dialogue going with MOTU and the last I remember I sent them an example of a patch that would crash UVI.
So, I have sought of shelved the Mach 5 even though I do like the interface. As you said, without content (samples) the thing is useless.
Cheers

I'd like to say that (so far - 1 week) I'm pleased with the results of slowly importing my old Emu E4 format stuff through UVIx. It seems quite capable and mostly the results are good. Yes, there's been the odd unexpected quit, but I've not nailed it down to anything specific yet, and it hasn't taken its host out with it.
For me it's little things I'm missing - no velocity or key crossfading for instance - this really mangles some E4 programs. And there seems to be no way to import full Emu multis even though the information's stored in banks that could be translated to Mach 5 performances.
Also, I'd really want to shout to any potential customers that "THE WINDOWS/RTAS VERSION DOESN'T DO MULTIPLE OUTS EVEN THOUGH THE MAC/RTAS VERSION DOES". (Ahhhh, that's better...)

Well, thanks guys. We need to get more critical mass on this thread for it to be useful. What we need are tips like this:
I've found that it is hard to find a lot of meaningful information on converting libraries to the M5 format, and this would be the place where it would make sense.
For Kurzweil formatted disks, sometimes UVI will fail to do the conversion cleanly. As a workaround, I used Chicken Systems Translator to convert the Kurz disks to EXS. I then used UVI to convert the newly created EXS instruments to MachFive. The results have so far been error free.

I've seen this particular topic (which is of great intrest to me) come up several times in this forum but, have yet to hear an answer. Anyone?
The most helpful thing I've seen so far is this thread:

But it only tells how to convert GarageBand's soft instruments to exs24. What do you do next? Call me daft but, I need a step by step.

dude, the simonbaymoo thing don't work no more. Apple made changes to the EXS format in the Jampax's and none of the translators (including Chicken) can deal with it.bug67 wrote:Well, can we? If so, how?

I asked Chicken if Translator could do it, and they sent me an email last week. Their tech support dude sez they are coming out with a new release in March that is supposed to translate the new EXS to Machfive.
Mach5 UVI conversions
That is a wonderful idea. I will check back in hopes that UVI conversion will be an on going topic. Thanks, Willie
Here's a UVI-xtract question. Has anyone ever used the Merge function of UVI. I'd like to use it but there's zero information on it in my MachFive manual. If someone's figured this out please let me know.

UVIX & Kurzweil

Hi ~ I've run into the same difficulty with my Kurzweil disks & UVIX. Some samples work fine, but most of the samples won't play; upon attempting to load them, I get the "InRom file..." error message. When I spoke to tech support rep at MOTU, he didn't seem to know what to say, other than my disks must be bad. I then researched the MOTU website, and found a tech blurb that essentially noted the problem with UVIX and some sample disks (Kurzweil among them). I wish this info was on the "Products" page ~ given the fact that I bought Mach5 specifically for converting my old Kurzweil disks, I would have held off until they were able to remedy the situation. Does anyone know if that is something that will be fixed with version 2 of Mach5?
All of that said, I was happy to see your note about Chicken Systems Translator. Where can I find this?
Thanks for any help you can give me!
