black square

Ever since I installed 10.4.4 over 10.4.3 on my 1.25 gHz mac my desktop icons and any input boxes in windows I open or select are outlined by a black square or rectangle. I don't even have to select a desktop icon for the effect to randomly appear around another icon. This same effect also often overlays the borders of windows I open and lingers even after I click that window away. Simultaneous to this outline effect, my Apple Menu shows duplicated menu titles like Log Out, Restart and Shutdown, the "new" duplicated entries appearing to have different keyboard shortcut symbols. Rebooting and fixing permissions doesn't help, and I dumped what haxies I have and all startup programs and no go. I just now reinstalled 4.3 from its CD but the effect persists. I don't know whether I downloaded something which attached something bad because I don't download much, and only things like utilities strictly from sites like MacUpdate and VersionTracker. So far this effect is annoyingly cosmetic, but it makes one wonder. If it can't be cured,

I found out what was wrong universal access was on!!
